SCHOOL PUPILS’ CONCERT
WHAKAMARA AGRICULTURAL CLUB A pleasant afternoon was spent at the Whakamara hall last Friday afternoon by a number of parents of school children and other residents, the occasion being the first concert conducted by the recently-formed boys and girls’ agricultural club. ' . The concert programme was: Recitation, Gwen Williams; playette, girls; haka, R. Scott, R. Coldwell and P. Buckrell; recitation, Gwenda Potter; playette, boys and girls; recitation, Jack Dobson; piano solo, Audrey Barkla; recitation, Zaidie Coldwell; vocal duet, Gwenda Potter and Zadie Coldwell; recitation, Douglas Gulliver; song, M. Barkla, N. Kelly, R. Coldwell and P. Buckrell; chorus, all pupils. At the conclusion of the concert Mrs. H. R. Scott gave a demonstration on Victorian posy-making, Douglas Gulliver thanking her for the interest she had taken in the club. Several competitions were held, the following being the winners: Collection of insects, Mavis Scott I, Ivo Buckrell 2, Madeline Barkla 3; collection of native leaves, Mavis Scott 1, Nola le Fleming 2, Phyllis Buckrell 3; toffee-making, Roslyn Scott 1, Jimmie Potter 2, Gordon Dobson 3. The judges of the competitions were Miss Hopper, Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Wrigley. The treasurer, Ivo Buckrell, presented the prizes won. The headmaster (Mr. C. J. Williams) stated that he had taken no active part in the proceedings, the idea being to encourage the children to have self-confi-dence. The result was most pleasing and he congratulated the producer, Roslyn Scott, and the performers.
