FLOW OF GLACIERS
SCHEME FOR MEASUREMENT.
WORK BY MOUNTAINEERS. -
The Canterbury Mountaineering Club may next season adopt a scheme for the measurement of the flow of glaciers. The idea for this useful scientific work is that one or two glaciers should be dealt with each year, the mountaineers placing permanent marks in a line with the terminal face of each glacier (states the Press)., Thereafter, every five years or so, measurements could be taken to determine the glacial flow and to show whether the ice is advancing or receding. It is thought that it would be advisable to mark the glaciers one or two at a time rather than staid the work on all the glaciers in one season. By this means the five-yearly flow readings would also be distributed instead of being a responsibility concentrated in any one climbing season.
The flow of the Franz Josef has been observed periodically. Glaciers which members of the club would probably deal with include the Ramsay and the Lyell in the Rakaia district, and the Murchison. Most of the headwaters in the main range from the. Waimakariri southward contain small glaciers.
A suggestion for this work has been made to the club, and it was stated that members would probably adopt the scheme.
