AT TE RAPA TO-DAY

SOME WONDERFUL FIELDS KING'S KNAVE’S PROSPECTS. THE CHANCES OF GAY SHEILA. (By “Hurry On.”) The fields for the opening of the Waikato Racing Club’s spring meeting at Te Rapa to-day are truly wonderful and the place machine will be paying on three horses in every race. All the cream of the talent ii. the Auckland province will be there and a strong Taranaki contingent will make things interesting. The day will commence with, the

Of the older horses engaged Silk Sox has as good credentials as any as he has been placed in both his two starts. Campanero has shown pace, though he has scarcely come up to expectations. .Miss Lulu and Arawa Rose have shown promise. Among the three-year-olds Alignment stands out. His form in open hack events has been good enough to draw a lot of attention to his prospects in a maiden race. Pelegia showed pace as a two-year-old last season while Lady Diacquinod and Queen Nona are promising. Alignment seems sure, to be fav-s ourite but Silk Sox and 'Pelegia will have supporters on the place side.

There is nothing outstanding in this event. Welcome Boy is a useful sort and rarely runs a bad race. Unoco gave promise of better things at the Great Northern meeting but has done nothing since. Valpeen and Ruby Meteor are well seasoned but St. Ames may need a race. Mia Stella is useful when in form but has disappointed of late. . Cargen has been working well and is expected to show up. Green Linnet’s track work at Hawera points strongly to her chances; especially as she will be ridden by I, Tucker, and she is likely to be better backed than Cargen and Welcome Boy,

Chief Lap 7 7 This race presents backers with a problem. The Gisborne representative Gainsford has some good form to his credit on the East Coast but he would be more at home over a mile. Ruri gave every indication of becoming a good one last season and though this will be his first outing for some time he is entitled to alot of respect. Cherry King’s recent efforts at Takanini have been distinctly good and a return to the form that he showed at Marton would make him . dangerous. The two Taranaki representatives, Bold Bid and Prince Reno, both performed creditably at Waverley but will be meeting tougher opposition here. Others likely to go. well are Gold Pocket, Prince Colossus and Phiakuo. In a fine betting race the chances of Bold Bid, Ruri and Gainsford may find most favour.

Though Baroscope accounted for King’s Knave at Ellerslie the conditions there were all against the latter; King’s Knave chnnot act in heavy going. The track at Te Rapa is likely to be fast and on top of the ground Baroscope will have a big task in attempting to concede weight to the Avondale Cup winner. Speedmint did not race very generously at Ellerslie and King’s Knave would appear to hold her safe at a difference of 21b. Prince Vai would only have to reproduce his Plumpton Handicap form to be well in the picture. Alloy is as honest as they are made but the class may be a bit too rich. Master Norval won at Ellerslie but he is at his best on a damp track. Desert Star's form has been too bad to be true. Gibraltar has a luxurious weight and his showing on the track at Hawera points to his being in the firing line at the finish. The race is open but King’s Knave should be favourite with Master Norval and Gibraltar also well backed.

Alloy also .figures in the cup but if reserved for this would command respect despite his big weight. Karangapai went so well at Ellerslie that he is sure to have a following but Allegretto and Cape Fair make more appeal. The former ran a really good race the final

day at Ellerslie, while the latter’s form at Whangarei was consistent and she seems to be on the upgrade. ■Of those on the minimum Kahunoke is useful and Emancipation may show that his win at, Paeroa was no mere flash in the pan. The best backed may be Allegretto, Cape Fair and Emancipation.

and Pound Sterling, was placed at the same meeting. Wahroonga made a promising debut when he dead-heated with Gallant Knight in the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie. None of the others'have much form .to commend them to backers though Top Flight and. Cynara. have shown pace. Straight-out bettors will’ probably go for Wahroonga but there will be plenty of support on the place side for King Brierly.

There appears to be some doubt as to whether Paganelli will be a starter but if he goes to the post he will have friends. Greek Gold has been disappointing but he galloped will at Takanini on Tuesday. L’Allegro on his own track will be prominent but may not have pace enough for the opposition here. Gay Sheila is the form horse; she has won each of her races this season with great ease and appears to be still improving. Orapai at his best is up to any company and his gallop on, Tuesday was unpressive. Bambury may be worried by the long straight but should be all the better for the race. British Columbia failed' at Whangarei and is too unreliable at the barrier. Prolyxo and Gay Marigold . are a likely pair of lightweights and usually do well on this course. Marechai is use-, ful when in form and Quietly i.; improving. Indications point to Gay Sheila being the favourite but Orapai and Gay Marigold may keep her busy.

Amyril has. the post of honour and should not be disgraced. She is very smart out of the tapes and can see the distance right out. Lucidus has the pace but the long straight is not in his favour. Sea Fox’s second to Gay Sheila in the Guineas at Ellerslie speaks well for his chances here. Holly Lu is galloping in great style at Takanini and Quietly’s Whangarei showings were good. Sinking Fund, Lady Zinnia, Grand Score and King Mestor are possibilities but among the lightweights none appeals more than Star Artist and Try Luck, both of which can muster a fine turn of pace. Tire chances of Sea Fox make most appeal but Amyril and Star Artist will have followings. Riding Engagements. Riding engagements for Te Rapa today include: — H. Goldfinch: Prince Vai, Orapai. N. McKenzie:. Try. Luck, Ling Moy, Master Norval, Jonathan, Scotch Nation. G. A. Baker: Musquil, Queen Nona, Phiakuo, Pound Sterling, Marechai. C. Goulsbro: King Brierly, King Mestor, Miss Lulu, Gigantic, L’Allegro, Allegretto. J. Smith: Cargen. O. Mclnally: Alloy, Paganelli. J. Mclnally: Eager Rose. J. Day: Boughal. T. Green: Sea Fox. G. Connor: Killadar. W. J. Broughton: Prolyxo. A. Gilmer: Wilton, Cruachan. H. Gilmer: Cynara. L. Clifford: High Crest. CARTERTON RACES TO-DAY FAIR FIELDS ENGAGED. CHOPIN’S BRIGHT PROSPECTS. (By “Hurry On.”) There will be racing to-day at Carterton when the local club will hold its annual gathering. The fields are fair and a good contingent from Trentham should not go home empty-handed. The principal event, the Wairarapa County Cup, has drawn a good field. Atholspear will not be there but Chopin’s good finish at Hastings last Saturday points strongly to his chances. Most opposition may come from Epigram, who ha. been galloping well at Trentham, and Thrasher, whose recent form has been good. The following should race prominently• Novice Stakes: Hunting Lodge, Roderick Dhu, Secrecy. . Carrington Highweight: Hazoor, Revision. . .. Wairarapa County Cup: Chopin, Epigram, Thrasher. Carterton Hack: Pegged Exchange, Bonnie Vale, Might. Bunny Memorial: Navaho, Miladi, Slippery. Maiden Plate: Umpire, May Pay, secrecy. Electric Hack: Pegged Exchange, Acceptable, Grand Blow.
