LOTTERIES FOR RELIEF FUND
FOUR DUNEDIN PROMOTERS FINED. VOLUNTARY APPEARANCE MADE. By Telegraph—Press Association. , Dunedin, Oct. 13. As a sequel to a queen carnival in which articles were raffled to raise funds, four chairmen of various committees appeared voluntarily in the Police. Court to answer charges of establishing lottery by which prizes were gained by a mode of chance.
The magistrate indicated that he had every sympathy with the objects of the campaign, to raise funds for the relief of distress, but it would’ be improper for him not to enter a conviction. The three defendants were each fined £l. The costs of the conviction only were entered against the fourth, but on a charge of selling liquor at a dance he was fined a similar amount. The. dance also was promoted to assist the carnival funds.
