TWO TARANAKI SURVIVORS RESULTS OF THE FIRST ROUND. PLAY IN EXCELLENT CONDITIpNS. MRS. ROTA SECOND FOR MEDAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. The first round of the New Zealand women’s golf championship was played in ideal weather to-day. The only Taranaki survivors are Mrs. A. Thomson and Mrs. I. Rota, both of Hawera. Mrs. Rota was runner-up to Mrs. Cook (Castlecliff), in the medal match this afternoon. . The results of the first round are:— Miss K. Johnston (Christchurch) beat Miss M. Ward (Heretaunga) 1 up. Mrs. A. Thomson (Hawera) beat Miss A. Quinn (Wanganui) 3 and 1. Miss A. Ormond (Napier) beat Mrs. L. R. Curtis (New Plymouth) 4 and 3. Miss Hansen (Miramar) beat Miss Acheson (Nelson) 1 up.

Miss P. McLean (Castlecliff) beat Miss M. McKenzie (Rangitikei) 8 and 7. • . Mrs. H. V. Johnston (Auckland) beat Miss H. Griffin (Greymouth) by default. Mrs. G. Williams (Masterton) beat Miss R. E. Gambrill (Miramar) 3 and 2. Miss E. Harkness (Nelson) beat Miss F. Foreman (Miramar) 2 up. Mrs. D. C. McFarlane (Christchurch) beat Mrs. D. Wilson (Hutt) 1 up at the 19th.

Miss F. Rathbone (Auckland) beat Mrs. Ferguson (Auckland) 1 up. Mrs. Newton (Wanganui) beat Miss E. Bell (Heretaunga) 6 and 5.Miss B. Gaisford (Marton) beat Miss M. Beadel (Christchurch) 5 and 3.

Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch) beat Mrs. E. Gilbert (Wanganui) 7 and 6. Miss White-Parsons (Christchurch) beat Mrs. W. B. Russell (New Plymouth) 7 and 6.

Mrs. I. Rota (Hawera) beat Mrs. J. H. Jennings (Nelson) 3 and 2. Mrs. Blair (Heretaunga) beat Miss M. James (Masterton) 2 and 1. Miss N. Grace (Wanganui) beat Miss M. Smart (New Plymouth) 4 and 3. Miss C. Wilson (Rangitikei) beat Mrs. T. W. Hosking (Auckland) by default. Miss O. Kay (Dunedin) beat Miss V. Smith (Napier) 4 and 3. The Coronation Medal match played this afternoon was won by Mrs> Cook (Castlecliff) with 76—4—72. Mrs. Rota (Hawera) was runner-up with 83—9 —74. Mrs. Cook’s was the best gross score.

The draw for to-morrow is:—Miss Currie and Mrs. Findlay, Miss Hanson and Miss Helean, Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Williams, Miss Harkness and Mrs. McFarlane, Miss Rathbone and Miss Newton,. This will be played over 18 holes on stroke play.
