HAWERA PIPE BAND BALL

SUCCESS OF ANNUAL FUNCTION. OVER 500, "VISITORS PRESENT. There was an attendance of over 500 at the Hawera Pipe Band’s annual ball in the Hawera winter show buildings on Wednesday night. The dance was under the patronage of the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Campbell). Representatives of the Hawera Municipal Band and pipe bands at Auroa, Eltham, Stratford and New Plymouth, together with the chiefs and members of the Hawera and New Plymouth Scottish societies, were present. The decorations in the three exhibition halls used were particularly fine. Bamboos and evergreens, relieved with cherry blossom lined the entrance and led to a rock garden set with ranunculi and red tulips among native ferns. The ballroom was canopied with streamers of red, amber and green. Baskets of fems and gaily-coloured butterflies were suspended at regular intervals. Spring flowers and the Stewart tartan were the features of the supper decorations. The ball opened with a grand march, Pipers R. W. Haddow and I. Campbell playing the music. In the lead following the pipers were Mr. C. H. Bowman, president of the band, and Mrs. Bowman, Mr. R. W. D. Robertson, chief of the New Plymouth Scottish Society, and Mrs. Robertson, Mr. D. G. Smart, chief of the Hawera Scottish Society, Mr. Duff of the Auroa Pipe Band, and representatives of the Stratford and Eltham pipe bands.

Trifles for supper were donated by the hotels of Hawera and the general catering arrangements were supervised by Mrs. Bowman, assisted by Mesdames J. B. Laurenson, T. Hobbs, H. Dowden, Naim, A. L. Campbell, A. Smith, J. Matheson, M. Bain, J. Henson and W. Reid. The waiting at tables was undertaken by bandsmen. Tribute was paid to Mr. and Mrs. Bowman fcr their excellent work in organising the ball and to Messrs. N. Linn and Naim for their assistance. Misses V. Arcus, M., Thomson and M. Dakers were responsible for the ballroom decorations. Mrs. J. Hobbs, Misses J. Henson and E. Campbell for the main entrance and “garden” decorations and Mrs. W. G. Simpson and Misses G. Purser and Mathey for the supper room decorations. Messrs. E. Hart, J. Kilpatrick and C. S. Davis assisted with the decorations. Wills’ orchestra provided the music, while pipe music for some of the dances was played by Haddow and Campbell. Extras were played by Mesdames Attrill, T. Muir and A. L. Campbell and Mr. McDonald. MILITARY UNITS INSPECTED. COLONEL SYMON AT HAWERA. The Hawera unit of the Taranaki Regiment and the Hawera platoon of the Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles were inspected last night by Colonel F. Symon, C. D.S.Q., who was accompanied by Major A. E. Conway, N.Z.S.C., New Plymouth. There were, also on parade Major Smart, Major L. M. Fairbrother, Captain A. W. Lawn and Lieuts. J. N. Henry, Sturrock and Evans. Colonel Symon will return to Wellington to-day. > ■ HAW PERS The Rev. John Watson, formerly of Normanby, was inducted to the charge of John Knox Church, Rangiora, on September 28 in the presence of a large congregation. The Rev. L. McMaster, moderator of the Presbyterry, conducted, the service and the address to the minister was given by the Rev. A. C. Watson, St Paul’s Church. A social evening was held after the induction, a welcome being extended to Mr. Watson by the district clergy and church, organisations and by the Mayor of Rangiora. Colonel F. Symon, officer commanding the Central Command, Major A. E. Conway, N.Z.S.C., and Lieutenant J. N. Henry, N.Z.S.C., were the guests of Mr. L. O. Hooker, president of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club at lunch at Dawson Falls yesterday. WAVERLEY “BRING AND BUY.” A “bring and buy” afternoon in aid of the produce stall for the forthcoming Anglican bazaar was held in St, Stephen’s Hall, Waverley, yesterday. A short play was read and musical items were given by Mesdames McWilliam and Tennent. Afternoon tea was served and a competition was won by Miss P. Belton. The winner of the competition for the turkey dinner was announced to be Miss Livingstone, Wanganui. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The Hawera Amateur Athletic Club will hold a “back to childhood and nursery rhyme” novelty dance in the Foresters’ Hall, Hawera, on Wednesday next, October 18, at 8.30 p.m. Particulars are advertised. The Hawera Bowling Club will hold its official opening on Wednesday, October 18. Bowlers and their friends are invited to attend. Hawera club bowlers are reminded that Wednesday will be a general tea day. The club’s additional green will be opened for play. Smith and Trim Ltd. advertises particulars of the mart sale at Hawera to-day at 1.30 p.m, of poultry, pumice copper and milk cans and of furniture removed to the mart for convenience of sale on account of Mrs. L. G. Grace and another vendor. DOUBLE STAR AT MANAIA. Imagine a young man very much in love with a charming young person, and, by a comical mischance, engaged to another young lady! The cast for the Gainsborough-British Lion production “Whiteface,” adapted from the Edgar Wallace thriller, “Persons Unknown,” is a notable one. The late Norman McKinnell who toured Australia with the last company brought here by the late Dion Boucicault, is at his best as Divisional Inspector, Mason, and Gibb McLaughlin is excellent as I Sergeant Elk. Gordon Harker supplies | one of his best comedy cockney cameos, and the good-looking Hugh Williams is well placed as a young crime reporter.
