MARKET FOR SMALL SEEDS

IMPROVEMENT IN CANTERBURY. INQUIRY FROM OVERSEAS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. After an unusually long period of slackness in the small seeds trade a definite inquiry has set in from England for ryegrass, both perennial and Italian, and to a lesser extent for red clover. Information by the last mail gave no indication of such an inquiry developing. The Continental and Irish crops of ryegrass were expected to be ample, and the French crops of red clover were good. Possibly the dry season in England has extended requirements for this week. Inquiry has come to hand for ryegrass at a price that permits business. It is suggested that America is in the market for ryegrass, the duty on this product being small. Offers for red clover are not liberal enough to» permit business, and as the American duty is eight cents per pound that outlet appears improbable. Ryegrass has improved in price locally by 3d to 6d per lb., and both perennial and Italian are quoted at 2s to 2s 3d a bushel on trucks. Cowgrass and cocksfoot have both been going out; in retail quantities for spring sowing, but there is no home inquiry for cocksfoot. It is quoted at to 5d a lb. for Akaroa and to 4d for Plains. Southern advices are to the effect that a home inquiry has developed for brown top, the crop of which was affected last year by the wet season in Southland and nor’-westers in Canterbury. The potato market shows little change, but interest in it is now small. This week’s shipments from the south were small. Whites are worth £3 a ton f.o.b. sacks in and Dakotas £3 15s.
