ADDRESS GIVEN AT HUIRANGI.

TROPHY PRESENTATION MADE. Pasture management with particular reference to dairying in the Taranaki district was dealt with by Mr. J. M. Smith, of the Department of Agriculture, at Huirangi last night. A lantern lecture was given by Mr. Smith on the lines of previous addresses. Prizes won in the Farmers’ Union hay, ensilage and pasture competitions were presented to 'the successful competitors by Mr. Smith. Brief reference was made by Mr. Smith to the recent Grasslands Association conference at Christchurch, which he attended.' He explained the constitution of the association, which was composed of all those who were interested in the improvement of the grasslandsof the country. Matters of particular importance discussed at the conference were strains of grasses and soil survey, both of which subjects Mr. Smith incorporated in his address. Mr. H. E. Blyde, president of the North Taranaki provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, at the request of Mr. W. Hall, president of the Huirangi branch, briefly touched on points of interest in' the dairy conference held at Wellington last week. Mr. Blyde congratulated Huirangi on the success of its farming and particularly Mr. C. H. Mackinder on winning the championship for hay. Congratulations were added by Mr. Smith,, who recalled that the first year the competitions were held Huirangi won two championship cups, that for ensilage being won by Mr. Honnor and that for pasture by Mr. Mackinder. It was interesting to find that from the same paddock he had now won the Taranaki Daily News Cup for the hay championship. Each year improvements were being made in methods of farming and the competitions had contributed to this improvement The competitions were of definite value as was shown by the high yield for crops, such as mangolds, and in hay and ensilage.
