CALEDONIAN BALL

GATHERING AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Visitors from Hawera, Stratford and other parts of Taranaki were included in the 500 dancers who attended the annual ball of the New Plymouth Caledonian Society in the Agricultural Hall last night. The striking blue and white decorations on ceiling and walls were embellished by panels showing the lion rampant, tartan cloth and other emblems cf Scotland. In such surroundings, encouraged by the national atmosphere imparted by the large number of kilted dancers, and stimulated by the music of the pipes, the assemblage quickly and easily assumed that gay, comradely spirit characteristic of such gatherings. The grand march, led by Chief R. W. D, Robertson and Mrs. W. W. Thomson, was played‘along by Pipe-Major R. Black and Pipers G. Cruickshanks, C. McLeod and P. C. Henry, Later these pipers and Piper Campbell (Hawera), accompanied the national reels, while the whole band played for the Circassian circle. Martin’s Orchestra provided the music for modern and old-time dances. The masters of ceremony were Messrs. J. J. Corkill, P. McKenzie, W. Jones and W. Jolinston, under whose management the evening passed smoothly and pleasantly. A decorative feature was the supper room, where the tables, centred by broad tartan ribbon, were coloured by vases of Iceland poppies, primulas, ranunculus, maidenhair fem and other garden beauties. These and the hanging asparagus ferns above were arranged under the supervision of Mrs. R. Bennock. The walls were relieved by fronds of tree fems. The supper was served under the supervision of Mesdames W. W. Thomson, Jones, Sarten, Black, Bennock, Corkill, Honeyfield, Johnston and Hoskin, Misses Bejaaocih Chap«i?n and Cawthray.
