WIN FOR SOUTHLAND

HAWKE’S BAY SIDE DEFEATED. BRIGHT GAME AT HASTINGS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, Last Night. In a good, open exhibition of Rugby at Hastings this afternoon the touring Southland team defeated Hawke’s Bay by 26 to 11. The visiting forwards showed definite superiority in hooking, which, combined with weakness in tackling by the home side, was responsible largely for the success of the tourists. At half-time the score was 15 to 3 in favour of Southland, for whom Berry, Mitchell and George scored tries which were all converted by Sharpe. Apsey scored an unconverted try for Hawke’s Bay. Hawke’s Bay did better in the second spell, when it had the wind behind, but the visitors scored, three further tries in the last ten minutes. For Hawke’s Bay Lequesne goaled from a mark and Steere scored a try, Bradley converting. Southland’s tries .were scored by Galt, Mitchell and Berry, one being converted by Berry.
