CHAMPION VINES’ HOPES
CRAWFORD’S CHANCES FAVOURED. , PERRY ALSO DANGEROUS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, Aug. 22. Rain further postponed the tennis championships at Forest Hills to-day. Tennis observers who accompanied Ellsworth Vines, United States champion, through Europe and were with him at Newport last week are not very hopeful of his chances in the national singles tournament if he meets Crawford (Australia), and they consider that F. J. Perry (England), F. Shields (United States) only a little less dangerous to Vines in defending his title. At Chestnut Hills, Massachusetts, Turnbull and Quist (Australia) defeated two local players, the Turner brothers, 6—2, 6—3, 6—l, in the first round of the national doubles. The match was eventless, the Australians’ victory being indicated from the very first, although ona of the Americans had. an exceptionally vigorous service which trouble Quist, hissreturns being almost uniformly- ’defensive. Crawford and McGrath (Australia) won by default from T. Flynn (Long Island) and J. Ray (Cambridge, Massachusetts). The Australians, being badly in need of practice, played informally with various club members to-day. DOUBLES AT BROOKLINE. PERRY AND WILDE HAVE WIN. , ■ v Rec. 7.45 p.m. New York, Aug. 22.
