LOWER LEVEL OF LAKE

POSITION AT ROTORUA DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. DECREASED THERMAL ACTION. i By Telegraph—Press 'Association. Rotorua, Aug. 23. On the grounds tha£ the continued low level of Lake Rotorua was responsible for the decrease in thermal activity, a deputation from the Rotorua Borough Council waited on the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. Bitchener) with a request that steps be taken by the department to raise the w’aters in the Irka to the level existing ten years ago. Members of the deputation said that observation over a long period had shown conclusively that a connection existed between the level of the lake and the height of the thermal springs in the vicinity. It was considered that if means could be taken to raise the level of Lake Rotoiti and consequently of Lake Rotorua, which flows into it, the thermal attractions would be-greatly increased, while fishing in both lakes would be improved. The Minister said that the proposal was a new one to him, but he would confer with the Ministers of Tourist and Internal Affairs, who were also interested in the matter.
