TUERA SHIELD RUGBY
TARANAKI-WANGANUI MAORIS.
STORY OF THE CHALLENGE TROPHY : Taranaki Maoris will play Wanganui Maoris for the Tuera Shield at Wanganui to-day. In August, 1927, the Tuera family, Wanganui, made a donation of a Maori challenge shield to the Wanganui Rugby Union for competition among teams of the Maori race.
The object of the donors was to encourage Rugby among Maoris. Recollection of famous Maori players, such as Alex. Takarangi, Martin Winiata, Kami Grace, T. R. Ellison, Davy George, T. Hiroa, J. Tairoa, Tamp, Opie Asher, Warbrick Bros., G. Nepia, J. Mill, L. Paewai, W. Barclay, Gemmell Bros., Peina and P. Potaka, served to indicate very forcibly how well the Natives of New Zealand shaped in the national game. To encourage others of the race to follow in the footsteps of those who have already won fame for the silver fern was desirable, the Tuera family thought, and the donation of the shield was made for that purpose, in particular, and to serve as a medium for cementing good-fellowship between the tribes of Wanganui' and Taranaki. Two years ago the suggestion that Taranaki and Wanganui play an annual Maori match bore fruit, and followers of Rugby in Wanganui have recollections of the bright, spectacular play of the two sides on each occasion. The teams for to-day’s match are:— TARANAKI MAORIS. Full-back: W. Tuki (Empire Old Boys). . ; Three-quarters: G. Ngaia (Okaiawa), R. Potaka (Waimate), R. Ruru (Okaiawa). Five-eighths: T.
