ALLEGED ILLICIT TRAFFIC
EXPORT OF OPOSSUM SKINS.
QUANTITY SEIZED IN LONDON.

Local detectives, working in conjunction with Scotland Yard, have unearthed an extensive illegal traffic tin opossum skins which have been shipped to London either as rabbit or fox skins secreted in wool bales. The slaughter of opossums is prohibited in New South Wales and heavy fines are provided. Detectives estimate that as a result of their investigations of the books of certain firms at Sydney at least 100,000 skins have- been shipped overseas surreptitiously since 1932, the value of which, despite the depressed market, is about £30,000. Evidence has been procured that motor-lorries brought the skins from the country to the city by night to an organisation run on systematic lines. The British Customs Department lias confiscated 60,000 opossum skins valued at £30,000 shipped from Sydney, says a London cable.
