PROBATION FOR A YEAR

CONCEALMENT OF BIRTH. MAORI GIRL PLEADS GUILTY. Pleading guilty to having disposed of the dead body of. her newly-born child with intent to conceal the fact of its delivery, Bella Thompson, a Maori girl, was yesterday admitted to probation for a year by Mr. Justice Ostler. The offence took place at Inglewood about May 16. As Mr. L. M. Moss was about to plead for the prisoner his Honour said he did not think counsel need address him as he was going to admit Thompson to probation. Addressing the prisoner, his Honour said that fortunately for her the grand jury had thrown out the bill of murder and she appeared charged with conceal-

ing the birth. That was a foolish thing to do, but at the same time he did not think any good would be done by sending her to gaol. She would be admitted to probation \for a year.
