Church Choir Festival.

Music and choral work played a more important part than usual at the evensong service on Sunday at St. George’s Church, Patea. The choir of 23 sang the anthems with expression and reverence. Miss J. Sheild was conductor and organist Besides special hymns, the following anthems and solos were, sung: “Vesper Bells” (Liszt’s No. 3 Nocturne), Mesdames G. Corbett and A. Carey, Messrs. C. Carey and A. Smiles; “O Sing unto the Lord a New Song,” choir with solo by Miss G. Masters and parts by Mrs. and Miss Masters, Messrs. I. Jones and Blackman; vesper anthem, “O Saviour, Again in Thy Dear Name,” full choir; solo, “The Lord is my Light and my Strength,” Mrs. I. Jones; solo, “The Throne of Grace,” Mr. A. H. Langslow.

Taiporohenui Hall Function. There “was a large attendance at the Taiporohenui hall on Monday for the euchre party and dance in aid of the wharepuni funds. Winners of the euchre were Mr. Wharemate, Mr. T. Edwin, Mr. P. Korau, Mrs. Bloor and Mrs. J. Rangiwahia. Consolation prizes were won by Mr. G. Whareaitu and Mrs. P. Rangi. A competition was won by Mr. J. Goodwin. Dance music was played by the Taiporohenui string band and Miss Walden’s Sunshine Orchestra, with extras by Messrs. R. O’Carroll and P. Rangi. The infant Maori girls of Fraser Road gave a poi dance, and Misses J. Poi, E. Governor, E. Epai and K. Reid sang. Mr. J. Pullen was master of ceremonies. Meremere Card Party.

The winners of the prizes at-the Meremere euchre party and dance were Miss D. Allan and Mr. W. Andrews. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss G. Murray arid Mr. W. Geary. The music for the dancing was played by Messrs. W. Murray, S. Geary and J. Bloor. The master of ceremonies was Mr. J. Bloor. Young Helpers’ League.

Hawera members of the Young Helpers’ League for Dr. Bamado’s Homes met Mrs. Allcut, travelling warden, at a function on Sunday. The programme of entertainment arranged by Mrs. W. G. Strange, Hawera branch president, was contributed to by Misses Eileen Dowden (Highland fling), Joy Winks (monologue), Margaret Simpson (song), Ruby Toy and Dorothy Gould (dialogue), Connie Lewis, (pianoforte solo) and Elizabeth Campbell (recitation) and Master Fred Johnson (violin solo). Mrs. J. E. Campbell presided and was presented with a posy of violets. Joy Winks was presented with a badge. Mrs. Allcut gave a brief address.

Hawera Cycle Handicaps. Handicaps for the Hawera Ramblers’ Cycling Club road race to-day are: J. Bourke 2m., B. F. Flintoff 4m., H. Wills 4m., R. Kelsen 6m., H. T. Putt 6m., G. Flintoff 81m., M. Jones 9.Jm., J. Rowe 14m., G. Dombroski 15m. Turi Street, Patea.

Improved access to the Patea beach will result from the formation of Turi Street. The work is proceeding, expeditiously under the guidance of Mr. T. J. Scott, president of the Patea Beach Improvement Society, and is part of the society’s progressive scheme to improve access to and facilities at the beach. Hockey Player Breaks Leg.

A Pa tea lad, Kevin Stanford, had the misfortune to break his leg recently while playing hockey. He is progressing favourably.

Painting of Borough Buildings. The painting of several of the Hawera Borough Council’s buildings has been completed. The appearance has been much improved, particularly in the case of the library. Hall Euchre Party.

The busy period affected the attendance at the euchre party held on Friday evening, when the prizes were won by Miss J. Johnston 1, Mrs. Marsh 2, Mr. L. Jenkins 1 (after a re-play with Mr. S. Hunt) 2. Ping-pong matches took the place of the dance which ordinarily follows the cards.
