CELTIC RUGBY CLUB’S DINNER

POPULAR ANNUAL FUNCTION. The Celtic Rugby Football Club, Stratford, held its ninth annual dinner last night Mr. F. Fqley, president of the club, presided over an attendance of 50, including Messrs L. J. Furrie, member of the Taranaki Rugby Union, Messrs C. R. Massey and F. J. Nolan, president and secretary of the Stratford Club, and Messrs C. Pellowe and S. J. Cyff, members of the Central Taranaki Rugby Referees’ Association. After dinner several toasts were honoured, interspersed with items. The toast list was: “The King ; The Patron,” Mr. F. Foley—Mr. J. W. McMillan; “Taranaki Rugby Union,” Mr. H. McCalman-Mr. L. J. Furrie; Kindred Clubs,” Mr. A. C. Walker-Messrs C. - Massey and F. J. Nolan (Stratford Club; “Club Coaches,” Mr. A. Cook— Messrs W. Hughes and F. Foley; "Host and Hostess,” Mr. J. W. Pooley—Mr. J. Ryan; “The Referees,” Mr. T. Attrill— Messrs C. Pellowe and S. J. Cuff; “The Press,” Mr. A. J. Tunbridge; “The Ladies,” Mr. J. Henry-Mr. P. Stephen. In proposing the health of Mr. McMillan, Mr. Foley said the club was fortunate in having such a patron as Mr. McMillan. Although he a busy man he was often to be seen at Victoria Replying, Mr. McMillan congratulated the Celtic first junior team on its performances. He said Stratford teams had a good record this year and both the Celtic first junior team and the Technical High School team were to be thanked for good displays. He stressed that what the public needed was bright football. , x _ Mr. McCalman paid a tribute to the Taranaki Rugby Union. He suggested that for the sake of brighter football the club and the union should attempt to have stupid rules relaxed and the game made less tight. . Mr. Furrie said he looked on the Celtic juniors as one of the brightest teams in the province. The game was what the players made it. He agreed that there were too many rules. It pleased him as a schoolmaster, Mr. Furrie said, to see the boys he had helped to train going on with the game; he mentioned two — “Snowy” Dodd and F. Young. The play this year was cleaner than it had been for many seasons, said Mr. Walker in proposing the health of kindred clubs.

“The Referees” was one of the most important toasts on the list, said Mr. Attrill. He thought the Central Taranaki referees were equal to the best in the province. In reply, Mr. Pellowe said he hoped the players would always play for the spirit of the game and not for the result. Mr. Cuff said the referees always gave of their best. ELTHAM GOLF CLUB TEAM. MATCH AGAINST NEW PLYMOUTH. The following will represent the Eltham Golf Club against New Plymouth at New Plymouth on Sunday: L. Quin, E. L. Abbott, H. P. Wills, A. A. Stewart, H. R. Casey, H. B. Maslin, J. L. Campbell, M. Ritter.

GENERAL ITEMS. Community Singing at Eltham. The Eltham Band’s second community singing and dance on Monday night proved as successful as the first such entertainment and there was again a good attendance. Mr. Les. Haycock led the -singing and Mrs. A. Beesley played the piano. Mrs. Attrill played the dance music and Mr. O. Manley was master of ceremonies. Eltham Rates Finalised. A special meeting of the Elfliam Borough Council confirmed the adoption of the estimates and formally struck the rates for the current financial year. These resolutions were necessary to complete the procedure owing to the reopening of the estimates at a previous meeting. 1

Nurses’ Educational Standard, “The board is satisfied that at the present time the standard of education of pupil nurses is improving,” stated the secretary of the Nurses’ and Midwive’s Registration Board in a letter received yesterday by the Stratford Hospital Board. The statement was based on a return, compiled from information garnered from practically all training schools, which showed that a big percentage of applicants had received two or more years’ secondary education.

Return Cribbage Match. A return cribbage match between the Stratford Post Office and the Antediluvians was played on Monday night and resulted in a decisive win tor the Antediluvians by 32 games to 21. Details, with winners first, are: Russ and Neal 6 v. Dickie and Cameron 6, R. Hignett and W. Brown 8 v. P. Aitken and Pooley 5, Rickleben and Green 10 v. Francis and Mangan 5, Bird and Eagar 8 v. Bublitz and Jenkin 5.

Hedges at Demonstration Farm. Mr. J. M. Smith’s report had stated that approximately 80 chains of fence lines had been planted in hedges and that the work should be completed in a year or so, said Mr. W. H. Were at yesterday’s annual meeting of the Stratford Demonstration Farm Society. As a matter of fact, he continued, the work would be completed within a week as they had been able to secure the plants and the labour. All fences on the farm were now planted. Mr. L. K. Tarrant considered that in the future the work now completed would prove of great value.

Rotokare Surprise Party. Between 30 and 40 residents of Rotokare and Fraser Road paid a surprise visit last Monday evening to Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Babbage, Rotokare. A very pleasant time was spent ’with flag five hundred, community singing and dancing, the prizes going to Misses Kerr and Gooding and Messrs. Porter and J. Babbage. The ladies provided supper, and music for the dance was supplied by Mr. Gascoine.

Notice of Motion Withdrawn. “In view of the fact that it is the intention of the Board to revise its rules, I will withdraw the notice I gave at last meeing to move the recission of the resolution requiring all complaints to be made in writing before they are considered,” said Mr. J. Cormick at the meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board yesterday.

Interest in Demonstration Farm. A welcome was extended to Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., and to a class of Stratford Technical High School boys by Mr. W. H. Were, chairman, at yesterday’s annual meeting of the Stratford Demonstration Farm Society. They could not do without Mr. Polson, said Mr. Were, and as for the boys, they were the ones “the older ones were looking to to carry on.”

Lodge Card Competition. The Foresters’ Lodge defeated the Manchester Unity by a margin of 11 on Monday night and thus annexed the Friendly Societies’ cup for inter-lodge competition in cards. A series of games has been played throughout the winter, and up till Monday evening these two teams were even, having lost but one game each. However, the Foresters conclusively proved their superiority by annexing the cup with 36 games to their opponents’ 25.
