TARANAKI ALPINE ACCIDENTS, jj ADVISER TO CORONERS. 1 A The appointment of Mr. L. O. Hooker, Hawera, as Taranaki adviser to . police and coroners in matters pertaining to Mt Egmont, such as accidents, inquiries into which might need the testimony of an authority, was subjected to criticism last night by members of the east committee of the Egmont National Park Board, who considered that Mr. Hooker had not the qualifications necessary for the position. That opinion was embodied in a motion of protest against Mr. Hooker’s appointment. “I think we should enter a • protest because the position should be held by a more expert person,” stated Mr. P. Thomson, who raised the matter. ? ' Mr. Thomson said the man for the position should be Mr. R. Syme, Mr. J. P. Murphy, Mr. H. N. (Murray or Mr. J. L. D. Rowe, or anyone like that who had had extensive, experience. Mr. Thomson said he understood the alpine clubs werq protesting against the appointment While he appreciated Mr. Hooker’s enthusiasm and organising ability he did not consider him qualified for such a position. The motion of protest, which was carried unanimously, stated that the committee considered a more experienced person shbuld be appointed and was prepared to nominate such a one if it were asked to do so. The motion will be forwarded to the Minister of Justice and to the Egmont National Park Board. i i“ . . LOWGARTH CRIBBAGE CLUB. CLOSE OF SERIES MARKED. To mark the close of a series of enjoyable cribbage tournaments and the conclusion of a successful season members of the Lowgarth Cribbage Club assembled in 'the hall last night to join in a convivial social evening over which Mr. J. A. Adams presided. With song, toast and story a very pleasant evening was spent, the musical programme submitted being admirably suited to the occasion. In the course of its games -the club played the Ngaere Crib Club on two occasions, suffering defeat both times, once by 16 games and again by 6. The occasion was also taken- to declare the season’s winners, and congratulations were bestowed upon Mr. E. Jones, the winner of the series, and upon Mr. R. Jones, the crib champion for the year. Messrs. J. Kilbride and T. Fryday, who also won .prizes during the series, were the recipients of further presidential compliments. On the eve of his departure for Oaonui Mr. R. Klenner, assistant at the Lowgarth dairy factory, who has acted as an efficient secretary to the district’s cribbage club, was made the recipient of a fully-stocked cigarette cabinet from members of the club. The presentation was made by the president, Mr. J. A. Adams, at last night’s smoke concert, tributes to Mr. Klenner’s ability and popularity being paid by several speakers.
