AERODROME AT SOUNDS
CELEBRATION OF OPENING. HOUR’S TRIP FROM WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim, Aug. 14. To-day was a red letter day in the Marlborough Sounds with the opening of the airport in the presence of settlers from all over both Sounds by two planes from the Marlborough Aero Club. The area, which was selected after investigation on the ground by the club’s officials, is almost exactly half way between Wellington and Nelson and Wellington and Blenheim. The visitors were welcomed by representatives of the Farmers’ Union and entertained at tea. The speeches emphasised the importance of the occasion, bringing the wonderful holiday resort of the Sounds within an hour’s flight of Wellington. The area is very suitable and with improvement will compare favourably with most New Zealand flying fields. . -. The official party comprised SquadronLeader Chandler, Flying-Officer F. R. Dix, Mr. E. J. Brammall (secretary), and Mr. E. C. Lawrence, of Portage; who represented the Sounds settlers.
