FIGHTING IN MOUNTAINS

CAMPAIGN IN MOROCCO

FRENCH LEGION HARDSHIPS

“LAST STAND” BY BERBERS

HEAVY LOSSES SUFFERED

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8.40 p.m. . Paris, Aug. 14. The Foreign Legion is waging a fierce battle in the Atlas Mountains, 10,000 feet above the sea. Much hand-to-hand fighting has occurred, the Legionaries losing 42 killed in a single day. The troops are suffering terrible hardships, fighting in a temperature of 120 degrees, destitute of shade. Two French aeroplanes crashed on Saturday, five men being killed. It is officially claimed that the battle represents the last stand of 5000 Berbers who are now encircled, but it must be remembered that, the French have before now claimed that the Moroccan tribesmen have been conquered.
