WAITARA GENERAL NEWS
COW INVADES CLOTHING SHOP. The nearest approach that Waitara has seen to the “bull in the china shop” simile in actual practice was witnessed on Wednesday afternoon, when a cow invaded a clothing shop in the vicinity of the Progress buildings. It certainly lacked nothing of the bull's aggressiveness for it scattered the drover who was taking it to the freezing works, entered the shop and charged a counter, behind which the shop manager appeared to have no desire to show his wares to the unwelcome customer. The bellow it gave may have been one of inquiry, but it was not so interpreted by the manager, who left the cow to serve itself. Finding no attention, the cow with a leaning towards clothes, made into the fitting room. It rested here a few minutes while the way was being cleared to ensure that its departure in nowise represented that of the “bull in the china shop.” Its attendant meanwhile by a strategic flank movement managed to induce the cow -to move on. It did, selecting a general store further along the street. A look round failed to convey to the cow any reason for a closer inspection. Having completed this final gesture of protest against the’ manner of its approaching end, the cow went on to the street again, and the drover with assistance got it on its way again to the freezing works. Euchre under Catholic Auspices. At the weekly euchre party under Catholic auspices the winners were Mes-. dames Munro, Young and Bartholomew, Messrs. Hunt, Bishop and Crossman. Freezing Works Win. Playing in the North Taranaki Card Association’s shield game at the Clifton Hall on Tuesday night freezing works defeated Bell Block iby 11 games. The scores were: Works 53 (cribbage 32, euchre 21), Bell Block 42 (cribbage 20, euchre 22). The response to the appeal for requisites for the relief ball to be held in the Clifton Hall next week has been gratifying. Supper arrangements will be along banquet lines. The decorations will be of the most elaborate description, excelling anything hitherto attempted in the district. The floor has 'been specially prepred. The music will be by good dance band which has been chosen for its brightness. Special free buses will run. Keen interest is shown in the event, everything pointing to it being most successful.
