CHEAPER ELECTRICITY
COUPONS FOIR DESTITUTE WELLINGTON MAN’S SUGGESTION. ALLEGATION OF OVERCHARGING. PROVINCIAL BOARDS ATTACKED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A suggestion by Mr. .S. Blackley that the Unemployment Board should issue concession tickets to destitute persons for the supply of electric power at cost price met with a mixed reception at a meeting of the Hutt Valley Power Board to-day. Mr. Blackley said the concession could be easily redeemed between the hydroelectric branch of the Public Works Department and the board. While power was available in the national scheme it would pay- the Government to do something to relieve distress and at the same time help power boards. There were 500 to 600 consumers disconnected in the Hutt district, ■ so there must be thousands throughout the Dominion. “The reason people are unable to pay their- accounts is that we charge too much for domestic lighting,” .declared Mr. L. Stewart, who opposed the proposal. “With the exception of Wellington, Auckland, ’Christchurch and Dunedin every power board is exploiting the people who are able to pay.” The board took no action in the matter. . <
