WOMEN’S INSTITUTE NOTES

Norfolk: There was a good attendance and Mrs. Buchanan presided. Supper arrangements for the Glee Club concert were finalised. Votes of thanks were extended to all who had sent exhibits for the institute’s stall at the Hawera show, and to Mesdames Riley, Buchanan, Chapman and Deem, whg travelled to Hawera and arranged the exhibits. A lecture on papier mache work was given by Mrs. Parker, Norfolk Road. A demonstration of cake-icing and decorating was also given by Mrs. Parker. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Herlihy and England and Miss E. Klenner.

Norfolk: Mrs. W. Brown presided over a good attendance. The making of seagrass stools was demonstrated by Miss Roberts and Mrs. Fowler, Te Roti. They were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competition, “word-building,” was won by Mrs. W. Brown, Miss Voitrekovsky being second. The hostesses were Mesdames Jury, Byrne and George. Normanby: Wednesday afternoon marked the occasion of the largest attendance at a Noimanby meeting, when there were present over 100 members and their friends, Mrs. T. J. Allan presiding. The medical superintendant of the Wellington mental hospital wrote thanking the institute for donations of magazines and books. Mrs. Peach (conference delegate) thanked members for her appointment, and promised her best efforts in their interests. Mesdames T. Taylor, W. Linn and Miss Flint were enrolled as new members. The social part of the programme was conducted by the younger members. A demonstration of making baskets from raffia was given by the senior girls of the Norfolk school. A musical item was given by Miss Pearle Gane and a competition was won by Mrs. Dawson. Mrs. Knuckey was second and Mrs. Laurenson third. Afternoon tea was served by the committee of young people and the visitors invited members to visit their institutes. Whareroa: A very good attendance was presided over by Mrs. S. Larcom. Visitors were present from Tawhiti, Normanby and Te Roti institutes. A scone competition, which drew 16 entries, was won by Mrs. Laing, with Miss S. Paterson second and Mrs. Larcom third. The judge was Mrs. R. Hicks senr. Songs were sung by Mrs. Tozer and Miss Gladys Reynolds played two violin solos. Mrs. D. I. George, who resigned her position as secretary because of illhealth, was replaced by Mrs. Tozer. Mesdames Aberley, Laing and Hawthorne, Misses Gould and Reynolds.'were the hostesses.
