HAWERA ITEMS

Mrs. Cundy, Wellington, arrived early in the week and will be Mrs. R. S. Allwright’s guest for a few weeks.

Mrs. B. McCarthy has been visiting friends at Wellington.

Miss E. Gordon, who has been/staying with Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bright for some time, left on her return to Masterton on Monday.

Miss M. Bailey, Feilding, who has been Mrs. T. H. McWilliams’ guest, leaves to-day to spend a few days at New Plymouth.

Mrs. N. Crump, Wellington, who has been staying with her sister, Mrs. Allwright, for the past week, will return home shortly. Mrs. W. G. Strange returned home on Thursday after a short visit to Wellington.

Mrs. L. O. Hooker returned to Auckland during the week. On Friday afternoon Mrs. H. R. Kemp was hostess at tea. She wore a prunecoloured silk frock. Miss Alison Kemp, who assisted her mother, wore a frock of sunset-toned silk with tri-coloured trimmings. Bowls of mixed flowers made pretty decorations. Among those present were Mesdames J. Rowe, Egglestone, G. Wyatt, Lindsay Bull (Hunterville), E. Lloyd, V. Powell, W. Fendall and S. A. Chisholm, Misses A. Page, H. Wood, K. Syms and P. Gannaway. Challenges and games played in the bridge circle’s ladder competition during the week have resulted: Miss Caplen and Mrs. R. F. Page won from Mrs. Collins and Miss Symes, Mesdames W. McL’ Dowfe and W. Jobson won from Mrs. J. B. Murdoch and Miss Sutton, Mesdames A. K. North and J. Dash lost to Mrs. P. O. Veale and Miss D. Richardson, Mesdames Hill and Tennent lost to Mesdames Dash and North. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Williams entertained at tea, when Mesdames A. Coleman, C. Tonks, Cox, D. Caplen and R. Leece, Misses G. Goodson, H. Wood and K. Coleman were guests. Mrs. W. G. Strange was hostess at tea on Friday afternoon. Mesdames J. R. Corrigan, J. S. Young, F, T. Lovell and W. F. Buist, Misses B. Young and D. Corrigan were entertained. Other hostesses during the week were Mesdames Fendall, McWilliams, N. F. Stead and Harrop. Wearing a black crepe satin frock with lace coatee, Mrs. W. Syme welcomed a number of friends to bridge on Friday evening, in honour of her daughter, Mrs. H. T. Underhill, Wellington, who is staying with her. Mrs. Underhill wore a smart frock of floral georgette. Mr. and Mrs. L. Ritchie, Mr. and Mrs. J. Dash, Mr. and Mrs. H. Swinburn, Mr. and Mrs. J. Ogle and Miss. M. Green were among those playing and the highest scores for the evening were won by Mrs. J. Dash and Mr. Ogle. Miss Cushla Tonks entertained at a mixed bridge evening on Thursday, Mrs. T. H. McWilliams, Misses M. Kissling (Auckland), Bailey (Feilding), E. Buist and R. Pease being among the players. On Friday evening the Red Cross rooms were filled to their utmost capacity, when about 120 attended a concert and social evening arranged by Miss D. Bryant in aid of the general funds of the Red Cross Society. The programme consisted of two plays, which were read in costume. Readers in “The Worm chat Turned” were Mesdames Twaddle and R. Walker, Misses W. Knight and P. Healey, Miss D. Bryant and Miss K. Quin. In “The China Dog” Mrs. J. C. Robb took the part of “Mother” and Mrs. J. W. Velvin and Miss Earle were the “daughters.” Songs were contributed by Misses K. Quin and M. Monaghan and Messrs. W. G. Simpson and B. Malone,, elocutionary items by Misses M. and W. Quin and a musical monologue by Miss N. Thomas. Supper and general arrangements were in charge of the voluntary detachment girls. Mrs. A. Webster, Christchurch, who has been spending a few weeks with her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Robinson, Princes Street, has left for Foxton, where she will be the guest of Mrs. J. H. Robinson.

Mrs. T. J. Allan is the guest of Mrs. W. Kaye, Durham Road, Inglewood, with whom she will visit the Women’s Institutes in that district.

Miss J. Stewart, New Plymouth, is spending a fortnight at Hawera. The Misses Joyce and Eunice Chong, Manaia, who are inmates of the Hawera hospital, are progressing satisfactorily.
