ALLOCATIONS FOR RELIEF

REPLY TO REPRESENTATION PROVINCIAL AND CITY CENTRES. NO INCREASE AT NEW PLYMOUTH. COSTS OF RENT AND TRANSPORT. A reply to further representations made by the North Taranaki Unemployment Committee protesting against the smaller allocations made to provincial centres compared with those made in the cities was received from the Unemployment Board at yesterday’s meeting of the committee. No further increase in the allocation to New Plymouth was possible the commissioner (Mr. G. C. Godfrey) stated. “It is noted,” stated the letter, “that your committee is .of. opinion that there is not at present sufficient casual work available at New Plymouth to warrant the difference between the treatment accorded to the city unemployed and that granted to the unemployed men m the main provincial towns. ’ ' “The position is that there are other factors besides the availabilty of casual work to be taken into consideration in the determination of allocation's to the provincial towns and the main centres. For instance, the rent costs are usually higher •in the cities than elsewhere. Other factors, too, are the cost of transport in the city, and the inability of city workers to provide for themselves and their families in the way of farm produce etc. •. ; • “Notwithstanding the different scales existing in the city and provincial towns it is pointed out that although there has been no restoration of the reduction made in the city allocations some time ago, the allbcatiqns in the case of provincial centres, have been improved. In this connection the allocation to New Plymouth was increased from and including the week ending. May 27, and the present sum. allocated represents the maximum financial grant possible with the funds available. ' , . “In view of the foregoing it is regretted that no further increase is possible at present in the allocation to New Plymouth. - ■ The chairman (Mr. J. Brown): They say we never try. We are always trying. It does not look as if the deputation to Wellington did any good. The: letter was 'received.
