Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., went yesterday to Wellington.

Mr. R. W. D. Robertson, New Plymouth, is visiting Wellington. Mr. W. C. Weston left yesterday morning for Welußgton, where lie will represent the Taranaki Trotting Club at the Dominion Trotting Conference. Mr. W. J. Ewart, manager of the Government Life Insurance Office at New Plymouth, has received notice of transfer on promotion to Napier. Mrs. H. Maddock, because of her husband’s death recently, is to receive a letter of sympathy from the Fitzroy Ratepayers’ Association. Mr. G. Colson, Devon Road, Fitzroy, iS seriously ill. Mr. Colson had an attack on Friday, but later recovered a little.

Rotarian K. R. Congreve (Wanganui), Dr. G. H. Thomson, Messrs. W. Dineen (New Plymouth) and R. C. Treweek (Matapu) were visitors to yesterday’s luncheon of the New Plymouth Rotary Club.

Mr. Thomas Rodgers, who died at Palmerston North last week at the age of 94, was said to be the first white child born in the Wellington province. He was the proud owner of 50 acres of land granted him by the Government as a distinction on that account. T. Waite, sen., Pembroke Road, Stratford, is a niece of Mr. Rodgers. The death occurred at New Plymouth on Saturday of Mrs. J. L. Campbell. She -had been severely ill for the post twelve months. Mrs. Campbell was one of Eltham’s best known and most highly respected residents. She was born at Huirangi, a daughter of the late Mr. Ruben White and Mrs. Mary White, who recently celebrated her 94th birthday. Mrs. Campbell’s marriage took place 29 years ago, since when she lived at Eltham until last year, when she took up residence at New Plymouth. She is survived by her husband and one daughter, Miss Nettie Campbell. Mr. C. H. White, Eltham, is a brother of Mrs. Campbell, and her three sisters are Mrs. R. Linn, Mrs. Jenkins, Auckland, and Mrs. Sutherland, Matamata. Mr. A. H. Johnstone, Auckland, who has been elected vice-president of the New Zealand Law Society, is a member of the legal firm of Stanton, Johnstone and Spence. He was born at Milton, Otago, and went to Victoria College, where he graduated B.A. in 1903 and LL.B two years later. Mr. Johnstone practised at New Plymouth and was president of the Taranaki District Law Society. He was also a member of the New Plymouth Borough Council and the High School Board. More recently he was president of the Auckland District Law Society, and has been a membei- of the council of the New Zealand Law So-, ciety and the council of Legal Education.

Tire death has occurred of one of Nelson’s early citizens, Mrs. J. C. Mercer, at her residence, Chiswick House, Collingwood Street, at the age of 72, says a Press Association message. She was bom at Llanelly, Wales. After leaving school she entered ■ the teaching profession, and in 1882 emigrated to Queensland, where she married the late John Charles Mercer. In 1883 they arrived at Nelson, where Mr. Mercer established a successful business. Mrs. Mercer closely allied herself with church activities and was an active member of the cathedral parish. For many years she was an active member of the Nelson Harmonic Society. She leaves a son and a daughter, Mr. G. .V. -Mercer, Christchurch, and Mrs. A. D. Park, Matai Road, Hataitai, Wellington.
