Weather conditions prevented a quorum being, obtained, at the householders’ meeting at Opaku, and the election will be held on a day appointed by the Wanganui Education Board. | MANGATOKI SCHOOL REPORT. EXERCISE OF ECONOMY. The report presented by the chairman at the annual. meeting of Mangatoki householders on Monday stated that economy had been exercised with a diminishing and the finances were Bound, £l7 5s lid having been brought forward and the balance at credit on February 20 was £l2 13s lOd, plus a board grant of £2 15s for fencing. The sum of £2O 6s‘lod wa| raised locally and greatly assisted the committee in ;.s sports and picnic programmes. To reduce labour ..'costs more shrubs had been planted. Much work, particularly on the hedges, -required doing when funds permitted. The cocoa supplied during the-winter months had been of benefit to the children, and had improved the roll average attendance., The social functions held by the committee to help the finances and purchase sports material had been successful. Three denominations had taken advantage of the facilities offered for Bible lessons prior to the school hours. The clergy had expressed pleasure at the good attendance, which was voluntary. The committee considered that the proposed establishment of intermediate schools required close attention, particularly in respect to its effect on country schools. Where the accommodation was available, the committee considered the advantages of the system could be attained by utilising. Standard VH. in the present primary schools. Proper equipment would be essential for success. The raising of the school admission age had not the district except in a small degree. Objection was also made to the withholding of the kindergarten grants by the Government. The headmaster’s report stated that the average attendance was much the same as at the. last annual meeting and stood at 68, being over 95 per cent. Through departures from the district and other reasons- the roll would be seriously affected in the near future, possibly reducing the school grade again. Owing to the withdrawing of .the motor service parents had been forced to divide the conveyance of the long-distance pupils among themselves. At the proficiency examinations all five candidates were successful. In the home science exhibton at Eltham only two entries out of eighteen failed to win prizes. AU handwork material had been withdrawn an it was suggested that the committee make a small quarterly grant for the handwork material in the infant room.
