SCHOOL FOOTBALL MATCH. A Rugby match was played between Kaponga and the Riverlea-Awatuna school teams at Riverlea on Saturday, resulting in a win for Riverlea-Awatuna by seven to nil. For the winners Gargan scored an unconverted try and dropkicked a goal, all the points being scored in the first spell. The game was well fought, good football being played. The defence on both sides was excellent and the outstanding player was Crowley (Kaponga). The Convent school is to be congratulated upon having such a good full-back as Crowley has proved himself to be. Owing to Riverlea-Awatuna electing to play two standard 7 pupils the match does not count for the McLeod Shield. The Kaponga team was conveyed to Riverlea in cars provided by -Messrs Carrington, O’Donoghue and Brisco. In the match between Kaponga and Kapuni last week the score in the second half was attributed to Behl, whereas it was obtained by Lister. Efforts are being made to arrange a friendly challenge match at Kaponga on Saturday morning next, when the present school ten will play an old boys’ team, of which there are six. Flag 500 Evening.
On Thursday evening at the Parish Hall a flag 500 evening, organised by the lady teachers, assisted by Mesdames Boyle and Evans, was held in aid of the State school girls’ basketball funds. The weather was unpropitious and the attendance was not as good as was anticipated. Tire evening, however, will result in a small credit balance which will be devoted to the purchase of a ball for the club. The prizes were won by Mesdames Dawson and Brewer and Messrs L. and Chas. Brewer. Mr. E. S. Death returned thanks on behalf of the organisers. At an executive meeting of the Kaponga Amateur Theatrical Society it was decided to produce a musical play this season, the proceeds to be devoted to the Kaponga district unemployment relief fund. A public meeting is being arranged, when details in connection with the proposal will be discussed, the name of the production announced and rehearsals arranged for. Mr. R. G.
