TRIBUTES PAID JARDINE
ENGLISH CRICKETERS’ DINNER. DINNER ON ATLANTIC LINER. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 1. The English cricketers on their first evening aboard the ship Duchess of Atholl going home from Canada held a private farewell dinner. H. Sutcliffe, presenting D. R. Jardine, the captain, with a silver cigar box engraved with the team’s names, said: “I can never say how much we all appreciated playing under you. We admired your skill, courage and fighting spirit, and the manner in which you upheld the best traditions of English cricket. Our games in Australia were less pleasant than they might have been; nevertheless we have the satisfaction of knowing that we were playing under a great skipper and a fighter. Every cricket enthusiast owes you a debt of gratitude for your glorious’ fight in placing England at the head of international cricket.
“I am- confident that Jardine ranks with any previous captain, and I hope that he will skipper England for many years and that we will be privileged to play under his leadership.” Jardine was deeply moved by the spontaneous acclamation and thanked the members of the team for their loyalty. G. Duckworth presented a silver muffin dish to Mr. R. C. N. Palairet, co-manager, and W. R. Hammond received a memento of his record score.
