TABLET IN THE FURNACE

SLIGHT DELAY TO MAIL TRAIN, i INCIDENT AT LEPPERTON. An unusual incident occurred at Lepperton on Monday evening. Just as the fireman was about to heave a shovel of coal into the furnace of the express locomotive the driver dropped .the tablet, which landed on top of the coal and in a split second had been thrown into the flames. Though'retrieved immediately it was burnt beyond recognition. ? On a busy section the accident would have entailed considerable delay, necessitating the provision of a pilot to the next station and back before the train could proceed, as the tablet system to ensure the complete safety that it doea is a very rigid one. In this case there was an alternative. After the telephone had been called into play and it was clearly established that the line was clear official permission was given for the train to proceed, and New Plymouth was reached a few minutes late. ; ■
