OPUNAKE TOWN CONTROL

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the Opunake Town Board was held on Monday evening. Those present were Messrs. A. J. Brennan (chairman), T. P. Hughson, L. Des Forges, W. J. S. Dudley, Dr. F. M. Griffin and C. N. Thayer (clerk). The board, it was decided, would cooperate with the Farmers’ Union, in calling a public meeting to organise relief measures. A telegram was received from the Minister (Hon. A. Hamilton) in reference to the Governor-General’s relief scheme. The measures in hand would carry out the Governor-General’s message, it was stated. A credit of £3 from the Anzac memorial services was reported to the clerk and it was decided that the amount be handed to the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Use of part of the domain was granted to the Opunake men’s and ladies’ hockey clubs. An application from Pihama Anglicans for use of the ground for an “oldtimers’ ” football match was granted providing it did not clash with Rugby Union fixtures. General and Personal.

Mr. Reg. Henderson, who has taken an active interest in musical affairs during his residence at Opunake and who is about to leave Opunake, was farewelled by a large number of friends at the Federal Band room on Monday evening. The president of the band (Mr. F. Julian), on behalf of the members, presented Mr. Henderson with a travelling rug. Mr. Henderson, who was the band’s conductor, in acknowledging thanks said he would be interested in the band’s welfare and hoped the band would carry on successfully. Miss Thom, the newly-appointed Plunket nurse to the Opunake and Kaponga districts, has arrived to take up her duties. The prize-winners at the Church or England euchre party on Monday night were Mrs. R. McCullum 1, Mrs. Maindonald 2, Mr. J. Judson 1, Mr. L. Newman 2. The Opunake Ladies’ Golf Club opened the season on Saturday. Mrs.. R. Morris, president, welcomed the visitors, and Mrs. J. P. Burton, vice-president, drove the first ball. The winners of the foursomes were Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Brennan.
