INGLEWOOD COUNTY

MAINTENANCE OF THE ROADS PUKEHO ROAD METALLING. MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. A comprehensive review of the work on the roads was given by the engineer at the meeting of the Inglewood County Council yestirday. There were present Crs. R. Stuart (chairman), S. Laurence, J. Hunter, W. N. Willans, S. F. Burson, H. R. Jones, J. Grieve, G. W. Gibson and A. E. Cowley. Mr. Judd reported that . the Makara Road metalling was practically completed with the exception of the deviation of the first 15 chains. The metalling on the Kupara Road would be commenced this week, while the deviation on the Makara Road was being constructed. Bristol, Richmond, Lincoln and York Roads had been graded. Durham Road west had been patched. Before the crusher set was dismantled at the Waiwakaiho 97 cubic yards of maintenance metal was crushed and stacked on Alfred Road. The Lepper South Road had been graded and rolled. Egmont Road south had been rolled and graded. The deviation at Peters’ comer was completed satisfactorily and metalled with metal from the former road. The repairs to the Manganui bridge would commence that day and it' would be necessary to close the bridge to traffic for a time while new truss members were being put in place. Highways estimates for the current year had been prepared and forwarded to the Highways Board. The Egmont north track was finished on April 11. Members of the Park Board expressed themselves as very well satisfied. v Suggested works for the month included completion of Pukeho Road, scarifying and strengthening where required of one mile of Durham Road west, scarifying of Kaimata Road south (first half mile), Rugby Road scarifying and strengthening where required. Cr. Burson said £2O would put the Bristol Road in the order it was prior to the summer tourist traffic. It was unfair that the ratepayers should have to put up with a corrugated road caused by tourist traffic. The chairman said that could be considered when next year’s estimates were before the council. FINANCIAL MATTERS. The Unemployment Board notified payment of £266.175, a refund of unemployment relief wages for five weeks ending on April 15. - The Treasury forwarded a cheque for £57 19s 3d, a refund of stamp duty on interest. Mr. P. Keller, district engineer, forwarded authority for an expenditure of £BO (free grant) for the construction of a sft pipe culvert on Pukeho Road to replace a temporary bridge. The engineer was authorised to proceed with the work, using relief labour as far as possible. - Mr. A./E. Surrey wrote drawing attention to' the state of Pukeho Road. Had the work been started and finished even a week earlier it would have been less costly and more satisfactory to the farmers, who were finding the money in order to have a usable road. He also drew attention to the poor quality of some of - the metal which was being used. The engineer’s report stated that the work had been commenced on April 13 immediately the trucks were free from the mountain carting. The bad weather and the small amount 1 of time available for work by the unemployed as a result of the intervening Easter and Anzac Day holidays permitted only five days’ work. A week’s fine weather would allow the job to be completed. The portion that Was countersunk in readiness for metalling had cut up with the continuedvwat weather.

Cr. Grieve said the quality was not there as the traffic had already gone through the metal. The engineer said that once the metal had settled down it would be one of the best roads in the county. / The chairman said any delays had been unavoidable. The engineer was authorised to reply accordingly. The New Plymouth Harbour Board forwarded a formal resolution levying a rate of 5-8 d on the No. 1 rating area and 5-12 d on the No. 2 area. Mr. J. T. Hogan applied for permission to cart 50,000 feet of pinus insignus logs from Mr. J. Dombroski’s farm, Durham Road west, to Fazackerley’s mill on Norfolk Road west during May and June. While not liking the idea of permitting carting during the winter, councillors did not wish to place any obstacles in the way of employing labour. It was accordingly decided to accede to the request, the engineer to frame regulations that would protect the interests of the ratepayers on both roads. A resolution was passed restricting heavy traffic during the month May to September inclusive. Cr. Burson gave notice of motion for next meeting with a view to having Bristol Road from the Junction Road to the Everett Road and the Everett Road to he end of he reserve declared a main county road. The engineer was authorised to dose the Manganui bridge, Junction Road, when necessary during repairs. ’. ' Notification was received from the Department of Lands and Survey that the deviation of the Richmond Road had been legalised.
