COMMUNICATION TO SOVIET

ANNOUNCEMENT PROMISED BRITISH GOVERNMENT ACTIVE TRADE EMBARGO FORECAST TREATY EXPIRING APRIL 17 British Official Wireless. Rec. 9.10 p.m. Rugby, March 27. Mr. R. A. Eden, Foreign Under-Secre-tary, replying to inquiries, announced in the House of Commons that the British Government was in active communication with the Soviet Government regarding the arrested Metropolitan Vickers Electric Company employees and an announcement on the subject would be made this week. It was not in the public interest to make any further statement to-day.

The Morning Post’s political correspondent interprets Mr. Aden’s answer to mean that unless Britain receives satisfactory assurances from Moscow with regard to the arrested engineers within a week powers will be taken to impose an embargo on the importation of Russian goods. The Government intends to be ready with these powers on April 17, when the present trade agreement expires.
