END OF HISTORIC BARQUE

HULK COROMANDEL TO BE SUNK. EARLY IMMIGRANT SHIP. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The hulk Coromandel, one of the most historic in Wellington Harbour, will be towed out to sea at 8 a.m. to-morrow and sunk. The Coromandel, a barque of 948 tons, was bpilt as Glasgow in 1875 and brought a large number of immigrants to New Zealand. She completed seven voyages and was then engaged in the intercolonial trade for several years. In 1896 she almost became a total wreck at Westport but was refloated. In 1896 she was towed to the railway wharf, Wellington. The Coromandel keeled over at the wharf and was not raised until nearly twelve months afterwards. The Coromandel was subsequently dismantled and converted into a coal hulk.
