CONSPIRACY ALLEGATION

AUSTRALIAN INSURANCE CASE.

FOUR MEN SENT FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, March 27. In the Commonwealth Insurance conspiracy case Corkhill, Page, Brain and Smith were committed for trial. Sydney Smith, Mattison Brain, Oswald Corkhill and William Page were charged on March 8 with conspiracy to defraud the shareholders of the Commonwealth Life Amalgamated Assurance Association Ltd. of large sums of money. Corkhill and Page were already awaiting trial on a charge in connection with another alleged insurance fraud. The prosecuting solicitor, Mr. Dovey, outlining the evidence, described it as a plot to acquire the assets of the Commonwealth Life Amalgamated Assurance Association amounting to £250,000, the ultimate object being to effect an amalgamation of that company with the Associated Dominions Assurance Company, of which Corkhill and Page were the chief officials.
