EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. The first euchre and dance party of tire season was held on Tuesday night by the Matapu basketball club in the Matapu Hall. There was a good attendance. The prizes were won by Mrs. D. Simpson 1, Miss Daisy Hoskin 2, Mr. T. Guy 1, Mr. H. Sharpe 2. Travelling prizes were won by Miss L. Hoskin and Mr. R. Findlay. After the euchre supper was served by members of the club and then the hall was cleared for dancing. Two novelty dances were held, the winners being: Statue fox-trot, Miss I. Reid and Mr. T. Guy; Monte Carlo, Mrs. Simpson and Mrs. Startup. Music for the dancing was played by Misses N. Startup, B. Seed and M. Guy. The master of ceremonies was Mr. W. Gatenby. Tennis Notes. The first round of the singles handicap competition was concluded on Monday, the results being: Miss Bremner (5) won from Miss L. Foreman (14) 60—59; Miss E. O’Dowd (—l5) won from Miss Lunam (9) 60—39; Miss I. Reid (—10) won from Miss O’Sullivan (scr.) 60—38; Miss M. O’Dowd (3) won from Mrs. Walsh (10) 60—53; Miss N. Gatenby won by default from-Mrs. Hurley; Miss M. Guy a bye; B. Barclay (8) won from W. Stevenson (—9) 60—58; H. Willis (5) won from C. Calder (scr.) 60—52; D. McCallum (—9) won from C. Blair ( —l2) 60—42; E. Guy (6) won from J. Calder (14) 60—59; F. Speed won by default from P. Tippetts; T. Guy a bye. The second round is: Miss E. O’Dowd beat Miss M. Guy 60—31; Miss I. Reid v. Miss Bremner; Miss M. O’Dowd v. Miss Gatenby; T. Guy beat D. McCallum 60—53; F. Speed v. H. Willis; B. Barclay beat E. Guy 60-58. General and Personal Items. Fire destroyed a haystack belonging to Mr. W. T. Seed on Tuesday. Mr. Seed will be a heavy loser, as he did not crop much hay. Mr. and Mrs. Seed, Miss D. Lloyd and Mr. A. Seed are spending a fortnight’s holiday at Auckland and Whangarei. < ■ Miss Marion Startup has returned home after spending six weeks’ holiday at Whangarei. Miss N. Rowlands has returned from her holiday at Wanganui. Mr. and Mrs. McL’Dowie hare returned from a visit to Matamata. Mr. D. Bourke, Feilding, who has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. J. O’Sullivan, has returned home. Mr. W. Gatenby has returned from a holiday at Wellington. Mrs. Harrington is the guest of Miss A. Brown. The Matapu school cricket team visited Okaiawa and defeated the home team by 36 runs to 32. J. Foreman (Matapu) was the outstanding bowler of the day, taking three wickets for one run.
