BOXING NOTES

defeat of al foreman. JIMMY KELSO’S VICTORY. The crack English lightweight Al Foreman, who is to appear at Auckland shortly, was recently defeated in Australia by Jimmy Kelso. ■ .- Writing of the fight the Sporting Globe has the following to say:— Though Jimmy Kelso got the decision over Al Foreman at Leichhardt, the margin was very small, and a draw would have suited quite as many as agreed with, the verdict.

Foreman did not shape as well as against Blay. Early he appeared to have something in reserve, but later his blows did not seem, to trouble Kelso. Time after time as the fight prograssed Foreman threw his punches from long range and failed badly in judging distance. Many of these fell short, and Kelso stepping in sent left and right to an unguarded head. It seemed peculiar that, a boxer of Foreman’s repute should be so weak in this phase of boxing. Ip the - second he got Jimmy slightly off his balance, and a sharp left caused the Sydney youth to fall between the ropes. This gave many the impression that Foreman had early ascertained he was Kelso’s master, and the fact that he was not so much to the fore in the following sessions strengthened the belief that he had eased up, but in every round Jimmy surprised him, especially in the close work, where he was Foreman’s superior. The visitor rarely used, his left straight —always as a hook or swing. When the crowd, which would have been greatly increased had they expected the local lad to make such a fine showing, realised that Kelso possessed a chance of victory they went wild, and when Yank Pearl crowned Kelso there was hardly a limit to the excitement. • , -

Despite Kelso’s success, the majority would favour his opponent in a return battle, but’Foreman will have to fight better. The tenacious Jimmy will take a lot of punishment, and, while not as quick as Al, has other assets. Leichhardt authorities will give the pair another contest, and Charlie Lucas was eager to bock them for Rushcutter Bay. A Delaney-Kelso fight would draw, too, for Jimmy is at his best now
