The Dominion Conference of the Methodist Church opened with an address by the new president, the Rev. A. J. Seamer. Referring to current problems, of which he said a root cause was selfishness, Mr. Seamer said it was not necessarily the church’s duty to support any one political policy or system, but it was undoubtedly its duty to insist that measures be taken to provide for all men certain fundamental rights—employment at a living wage and in times of distress provision by the Government and not by charity for essential needs. This provision should be made in such a way as not to rob the recipient of his selfrespect. The following officials were elected for the next conference: President-elect, the Rev. C. Eaton (New Plymouth); secretary, the Rev. W. A. Burley (Nelson). Mr. S. G. Martin (Wellington) was elected vice-president of the present conference.
