EARLY SHOW SCHEDULE

ENCOURAGING PRODUCTIVITY. A copy cf the Normanby Horticultural Society’s 1885 show schedule /is full of interest. The discerning observer can see in it not a little that has helped to build South Taranaki to its present state of fertility. Even the names cf the officers call up memories of the pioneers who laid the sound' foundation for the future. Mr. J. Livingston was president, Mr. J. S. Caverhill vice-president/’ and Mr. A. G. Brett secretary and treasurer. Then on the committee were Messrs. J. Morrison, W. L. England, W. Nicoll, J. Crocker, H. Saxders, F. Hirst, G. W. Epping, A. Riddell, W. A. Earle, T. Robson and 'J. \ Hunger. The classes for pot plants and cut flowers were much the same as they are now, but in the farm and garden section were classes for hops and tobacco. Quinces, medlars, wine and candles were some of the things catered for among the preserves. There was a special section' for dairy produce. This among other things made provision for butter, cheese, ham, bacon, lard and Devonshire cream. 4 The part played by the society in laying down South Taranaki in pasture « recalled by the grain section. This included - classes for wheat, barley, oats, peas, beans and maize, cocksfoot, rye, prairie, timothy, meadow fescue and clover. . \ There was'of course a poultry section. A class that to-day could not be reintroduced was for tuis. ‘ The miscellaneous section included everything from curios to beehives. There was a class for boots made in the district, and a class for the best collection of garden tools. In fact such importance was attached to the latter is a method of introducing better methods that the schedule bears the following note: “The committee will take it as a special favour if any person possessing any special farm or garden implements or any latest improvements in dairy utensils will exhibit them for public in-/ spectiori.” '
