JUDGES AND EXHIBITORS

AWARDS AT FIRST SHOWS. Among the list of judges and exhibitors at the early shows are many names familiar to the present generation, many being noted for their work In various directions for the welfare of the district. Judges at the first show were Messrs. Ball and Mitchinson, fruit and vegetables; Laird, cut flowers; Hulke, Bate and Ecclesfield, dairy produce; and Livingston, grain and grass seed. In the following two or three shows the same gentleman officiated with the. addition of Messrs. Kelvington, Fantham,. Heslop, Moreshead, Mynott,. Hare, Yorke and Coomber. Mrs. Yorke. and Miss Caldwell were judges at the. 1885 show, and Mr. R. Cock, New Plymouth, was a /judge during the next . few years. Among the exhibitors. who. secured awards at the first show. .were Mrs. Walker, now resident at Normanby, first prize for butter; Mr. W. K. Hulke. New Plymouth, second for butter; Miss McKay, New Plymouth, and D. Silence, Hawera, . butter; J. Cheyne, Ngaere, cheese; Miss McGregor, cakes; Mrs. Saunders, Ngaere, jam; Messrs. Leech, F. V. Bate, T. Mason, W. L. England, W. Miller, J. Leitchwark, W. Rye, P. Dolan, J. Mason, Weatherfield, Watkins, Roper, F. Finlayson, Orr, Mrs. Wales and Mrs. Pollard, seeds, farm and garden produce. McGregor, Mrs. Crocker, and Messrs. T. Mabey, Stewart, Sergeant, F. W. Ep-' ping, D. Bowen, W. Sanson and Mrs. Towers, now Mrs. C. W. Young, Normanby. At the next few shows large exhibitors were, in addition to many of those who competed at the first show, Messrs. K. Kilvington, J. C. Yorke, F. Simmons, C. Quin, C. Sanders, J. Crocker, R. Payton, R. S. Thompson, W. Nichol!, Robt. Douglas, K. Kenny, S. Adams and Mesdames Earle, Bryson, J. Matthews, Dalton, W. Wales, A. G. Brett, W. King, W. A. Parkinson, Kilvington, Brooking, Fantham, Broderick, Martin, Wilson and Miss S. Hall. Placed competitors in a class for. children’s bouquets at the 1885 show were Miss E. Rowe, Miss England and Miss M. McKay. A boy’s race at the same show resulted in Adamson, Joe Towers and Quin being placed in that order. At the third show, 1886, there was good competition in butter and cheese, Moa Factory winning the class for a keg of salted, butter, and Opunake factory being awarded first for a 201 b. cheese.
