HEADMASTER WELCOMED
EMPIRE OLD BOYS’ FUNCTION. INFLUENCE OF OLD PUPILS. Mr. J. Dash, M.A., the new headmaster of the Hawera High School, was welcomed by a representative gathering of the Empire Old Boys’ Association on Friday night. The president of the association, Mr. G. J. Bayley, was in the chair. - Mr. Bayley in extending the association’s welcome to Mr. Dash said the Hawera High School Board had made a happy choice as a successor to Mr. A. Gray. Mr. Dash was a gentleman and a sportsman. The association would not ask for more. Mr. Bayley was supported by Mr. A. Walker, president of the Hawera High School Old Boys Association. Mr. Dash acknowledged the welcome and expressed his appreciation of the good wishes extended. The meeting was then addressed by Mr. Dash, who spoke on the influence that old boys could exert. He summarised, his remarks by pointing out the schools were judged by their old boys and that the association had greater work before it than the mere holding of re-unions, as old boys of secondary schools could and should take a more prominent part in civic affairs. Mr. Dash suggested that an old boys day, open not only to old boys of the school, but also to members of the Empire Association, should be arranged at the Hawera High School, and his invitation was accepted. Mr. Dash’s health was then honoured. The toast of “Old School” was proposed by Mr. M. Niccol, replies being made by Messrs. C. N. Vickridge (English public schools), M. R. Jones (Maori schools), F. E. Clarke (North Island schools) and Dash (South Island schools). A short business session was held, when the proposed sports activities of the association were outlined and endorsed by those present. The immediate programme will include tennis, cricket, golf and Rugby football.
