FROM TRACK AND STABLE

HORSES FOR WANGANUI SILVER SCORN A GREAT FILLY. BRONZE eagle in work again. (By “Hurry On.”) There was a shortage of riders at New Plymouth on Saturday. The Awapuni trainer L. Knapp was compelled to scratch Riotous at 11.25 a.m. in the Hurdles on account of no hurdle jockey being available, and later in the day Kaster Time had to be withdrawn from the Urenui Handicap owing to his owner being unable to secure a rider at the weight. Engaged at Wanganui. A. D. Webster has First Acre, Bayacre and Hunt the Slipper engaged at Wanganui to-morrow. All these three art engaged in the big, Australian autumn meetings, and it would seem as though the Otaki trainer intends to have them in racing trim before shipping across the Tasman. First Acre won his last race in New Zealand on the second day of this gathering two years ago. Starter’s Unusual Problem. ' An unusual starting problem seemed to await Mr. S'. D. McNab at Riccarton next Saturday. In addition to the remainder of the field in the Middle Park Plate he might have had to get McNab away at the same time. A two-year-old C-' rejoicing in that name survived the first forfeits for the Plate, but it appears that he was left in by mistake. The ■ •horse McNab, who is by Rosenor from Murihaku, is trained at Wingatui by H. A. McDonald for'Mr. R. R. McDonald. He ran unplaced in the McLean Stakes at the Dunedin October Meeting. A Good Record. Horses trained at New Plymouth have enjoyed their fair share of success during the past season and have between them won no less than 31 races. e “ fresher has been the most successful, having credited his owner with six wins. Next come Glenvane with five and Orapai with four. Glowlight and Merry Way have collected three each, while Lady Quex, Cereal and Arvada haye each two. Lucky Alice and Royal Bengal have one apiece. R. Barlow has been the most successful trainer with 11 wins, but he is closely followed by j. with 10, R. Johnson has six and E. George and the owner-trainer Knight two each. Glenvane’s Failure. Last Wednesday morning Glenvane went stride for stride with Refresher over five furlongs, and after the former had won the Flying the Weathervane three-year old seemed to have a great chance in the Mimi Highweight. When he led into the straight his supporters were on good terms with themselves, but he stopped very badly over the last furlong. It transpired that he bled, and this accounted for his poor finish. It is to be hoped that the trouble is not serious as the big gelding is a galloper well above the average. ' . An Unprofitable Trip. ,'■* The owner of Inflation will no doubt be regretting that he did not send the Paper Money colt to New Plymouth instead of embarking on the long trip to Dunedin. He certainly earned a little -stake money as the result of two third ~ <placings but this would hardly cover the expenses of the trip to the southern centre. Nevertheless the racing will do Inflation good and he should be a fit , ■ horse at Trentham next month. A race like the Thompson Handicap would be well within his capabilities if he were back in the form that he displayed at Sydney in the spring. New Plymouth Track. There was very little doing on the New Plymouth track yesterday morning, the only gallop being that of Royal Bengal and Lucky Alice, who ran three furlongs on thd outside of the course proper in 39Js. Royal Bengal and Arvada will be , the only ones from the track to go to '■ Wanganui. Arvada has never looked better and is putting plenty of vim into her work, but her displays with the colours up have been wretched. She has her connections well puzzled. S. Reid with Eminent, Might and Clanger left for Wanganui yesterday morning. All three have done well since racing last week. The kick received by Brambletorn was not as serious as was at first thought and it is hoped that he will make a speedy recovery.

May Redeem Himself. When Diatomdus won the Royal Stakes at Ellerslie on the final day of the summer carnival there were a number of good judges who hailed him as the best of his age, and he was sent out a piping hot favourite for the Wellington Stakes three weeks later, only to fail to run into a place. , His connections, however, did not consider this was his true form and he is to be given an opportunity of redeeming himself at Wanganui to-mor-row, when he is to contest the Juvenile Handicap. If both Golden Hair and Might go to the post he will require to be all that they claim he is„to win, though the turning course will be all in favour of a brilliant beginner like this son of Diacquinod. An Australian Letter.

A leading Melbourne trainer writing to a New Plymouth friend has some very interesting remarks to make about the autumn prospects in Australia. Peter Jackson and Gaine Carrington were doing well under the care of C. T. Godby, though the latter had not built up much during his spelL Splutter is on the improve and sure to win races at the smaller meetings. E. A. Connelly is still on deck and rumour has it that he has something good enough to have a tilt at the ring during the autumn. Several of the failures of King Colossus have been expensive, the ex-New Zealander failing when eveh the hardest heads considered him almost unbeatable. Bronze Eagle Resumes.

Bronze Eagle, who has been turned out on a property in the Matamata district, is back again in his old quarters at Takanini. He is stated to have benefited considerably as the result of his lengthy spell, and all going well he is likely to resume work at an early date. Bronze Eagle’s three-year-old performances were brilliant ,and if he were to reproduce the same form he would win plehty of money. He had only eight starts last season and he won four of them, including .the two Derbies. His last race was when he was beaten by Gfty Crest in the Clifford Plate on the .final day of the Auckland summer meeting just over twelve months ago. During his spell he has been mated with a few mares belonging to his owner, Dr. W. C. Ring. How Good is She?

What a great filly Silver Scorn is! Her brilliant victory in the Dunedin Cup has stamped her as the best—better than Desert Gold, according to the southern critics. Even given in that the opposition she was up against last week was not first-class, she could not do more than beat them, and the time, 2m. 31 4-ss. shows that there was no loafing on the journey. So far this daughter of Silverado has never really been tested, and what she is actually capable of we do not know. She ran the mile and ain the Canterbury Cup in 2m.

4s and was never doing her best at any stage of the journey, while in the Great Northern Derby her rider is reported to have stated that he could have given the field a furlong start and still won. Should she contest the Awapuni Gold Cup on her way to the A.R.C. Easter meeting, it would be very interesting'if her owner would allow her to be ridden out to tackle the Australasian record for ten furlongs. This at present stands to the credit of Phar Lap at 2m. ZAs. made in the Craven Plate at Randwick.

WORK ON HAWERA TRACKS.

PREPARATIONS FOR WANGANUI.

There was not a great deal of fast work at Hawera yesterday as most of. the horses have not sufficiently ."'recovered from their races at New Plymouth last week. Only six from Hawera will go to Wanganui to-morrow, but several others may go down for the. second day. Al the galloping, was done on the trial grass, which, although slightly holding, was not as soft as might be expected considering the recent heavy rains. Shillong. (W. E. Pine) was too good for the Kuapapa roan (Brough) over half a mile in 51s. . Shillong is working well and may compete at Wanganui on Saturday. The Ruapapa roan is improving rapidly and shows plenty of pace for a green horse. , ■ ■ , ■ ■ J. Fryer’s new acquisition, Gibraltar, was out doing trotting exercise on' the oval.

A good deal of the light exercise was done on the outside of the two-year-old track; Awaken, St. Clara, Icier, March Alone, Calamine, and Green Linnet were all worked there. Calamine is. standing up to her racing well. She will be ridden at Wanganui by L. Dulieu. Alone Marjoram (W. E. Pine) reached the end of a mile in Im. 465. With N. Davidson in the saddle he was sent over a round of the schooling fences on Monday, jumping satisfactorily. Rapper (Brough) slipped over - three furlongs in 37As. He should do much better when raced again. > • Peschiera (W. E. Pine), and Golden Hair (J. M. Pine) were fractious at the half-mile peg, eventually leaving it from practically a standing start. Consequently the first furlong occupied almost 145., but they then cracked' on the.pace to run two furlongs in 25 3-ss. and the full distance in 59js. Golden Hair had the inside, running and was- gojng 'the better at the finish. She is in a different class to her- companion, but nevertheless the Tea Tray colt worked well. Tenacre was worked on -the sand, i He will not start to-morrow but is : to be taken to Wanganui for the second day. On the same track Chief Link, Carfex and Chfcf Line were allotted useful light exercise. ’ '■ ■ ■

Attentive is'.suffering from-a burn on his shoulder but is recovering rapidly. There was little work after breakfast. G. Richards was out- wi/h-The Tiger, Flying East and Oriel. The ■ latter pair are both carrying a ■ good deal of condition and will require plenty of time. W. E. Pine, who rode promisingly last week, will have the mounts on Bonnie Vale and Navaho to-morrow. Several Hawera horses have been nominated for Te Aroha, and all -going well in the meantime there should be a strong represehtation at the northern meeting. , Those to leave for Wanganui to-day will be O. Cox with Davistock, Peschiera and Golden Hair; M. Conway with Marjoram and Calamine; J. Fryer with Green Linet; W. Pine, R. Brough and J. Brown will most likely take horses on Friday for the second day. MANAWATU TROTTING CLUB. PROGRAMME FOR MEETING. The attention of owners and trainers of trotting horses is drawn to the’meeting of the Manawatu Trotting Club, to be held on the Ashhurst racecourse on March 15. The principal event, the Manawatu Trotting Cup, run over two miles for horses who have done 4.46 or better, carries a stake of £lOO, while the President’s Handicap, one mile and a quarter, 2.57 class, and the MacDonald Handicap for unhoppled trotters, two miles, 5.5 class, both carry £7O added money. No race on the programme is worth less than £55, and the meeting is sure to be well patronised from the Taranaki province, especially as it comes just before the Hawera and New Plymouth circuit. Free stabling is provided for all visiting horses, and the win and place system of totalisator investment will be used. Nominations for all events close with the secretary, Mr. A. H. Manson, Palmerston North, at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 24. WANGANUI TRACK WORK. TRACKS IN SPLENDID ORDER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, February 14. A number of visiting horses is expected to arrive to-day for the Wanganui Jockey Club meeting, which will open on Thursday. The weather was fine this morning and the tracks were in splendid order for training operations, but there were only a few fast gallops. Ganpat. went six furlongs, the first half in 525. and the full distance in Im. 17 4-ss. Pomp covered five furlongs in Im. 3 l-55., the first three in 36 l-ss. No Humbug went six furlongs in Im. 18s., Arisus taking Im. 18 2-ss. Welcome Ltt, Gold Gleam, Midinette and a number of others did useful work. WOODVILLE RACE MEETING. \ BRAMBLETORN GIVEN TOP WEIGHT.
