ON TARANAKI TRACKS

FINAL TRIALS FOR EGMONT LADY QUEX’S GREAT HALF MILE. MARCH ALONE AND ICIER GO WELL. (By “Hurry On.”) A great half-mile by Lady Quex at New Plymouth and good efforts by March Alone, Icier and Chief Line at Hawera were the features of the final trials forthe Egmont meeting yesterday morning. Most of the visiting horses are already at Hawera and everything points to some' good racing to-day. At New Plymouth the rain overnight had not made a great deal of difference to. the tracks, which were again fast, and most of the work took place on the plough. Cereal was the first to go and he did half a mile very easily in 51s on the trial grass. Arvada was well in front of Lucky Alice at the conclusion of seven fur-, •longs, the last five of which took Im 41s. The latter has not been working well the last two mornings but may do better with the colours up. J Orapai, Glbwlight and Merry Way: went twice round, the second time at a 1 good three-quarter pace, running the; last five in Im Bs. All three hit out very freely, especially Glowlight. ,i The two-year-old Chief , Ruler filly. Headmistress caused a mild surprise, when she finished half a length in front; of Royal Bengal over half a mile on the; grass in 48 4-ss. Though on the small; side this filly is shapely and has an at-; tractive style of galloping. Royal Ben-> gal also shaped pleasingly and may start; to-morrow. ' Gibraltar did not go. at all kindly and! was no use to Easter time over seven; furlongs in Im 29 4-ss, the latter finish-: ing four or five lengths in front. The: first half-mile took 50s and the lastthree furlongs 39 4-ss. Easter Time again showed plenty of pace but Whether he will produce it to-day is problematical. Lady Quex was again responsible for the gallop of the morning when she slipped over half a mile in 48 l-5s and did. it well. Hawera Tracks Softer.

Showers during the night softened the tracks slightly at Hawera and the times for yesterday’s gallops were slightly slower than those of last week. The course proper is in great order for to-day’s races and unless rain falls ir>. the meantime indications are that the going will be firm but with the sting out of it. Aga Khan was out doing pace work. His mission to-day will be the Nolan; Hack. • '

Awaken hit out freely .in- a working; gallop over a mile. ■ . ' . No Doubt (Parkes) cantered , once round, and sprinted up the straight. . I Icier (Duncan) surprised by finishing; on terms, with Green Linnet..(Weston)’ at the end of five furlongs in Im sjsj on the outside of th'e course’ proper. Al-; though she had much the better of the, weights Icier went well for a maiden'. I The Ruapapa roan (Brough),.unaccom-: panied, ran three furlongs on the plough! in 39 l-ss. , Calamine (Flowers), Marjoram (Parkes) j and Tenacre "(Vaughan) were' compan-i ions over a mile on the plough. Marjoramled for the first half mile in 52 3-5 s l>ut‘ when the winning.post was reached Ten-' acre had a length to spare from Gala-; mine with Marjoram three or four lengths back in Im 46 2-ss—a good ef--fort for hurdlers.. Tenacre went, well but had an advantage in the weights. Calamine went much better than she has gone recently but Marjoram seeiris not ready yet. On the course proper March Alone (Duncan), Attentive (Feasey) and Chief Line (Weston) were sent over a mile. They took lnv ,53s for the distance and at the conclusion March Alone was half a length in front of Attentive with Chief Line a similar distance behind. All, horses moved well, Chief Line in particular going much better than he did on Monday. Peschiera (Grylls) and Davistock (Arthurs) ran home the last two furlongs of a round of pacewprk. Shillong (Brough) slipped over three furlongs on the outside , of the ocurse proper in 395. ■" v On the same track Tentcall (W. E. Pine) was apportioned! a. working gallop over a mile. / Copey, (Weston) . was given - a similar task. • ■ ~ " The Hawke's Bay trainer R. Gregory, was out doing lighCwork with Kimbo, Royal Dash and Lady Spy. -These horses, arrived on Monday and seem in order; for the races. Lady Spy, who claims a dual engage- ( nient to-day, will forego her EgmontCup engagement in favour of the Whpr.eroa Welter. x • i Royal Dash ran 'second to Hybiscus on Saturday and is expected to go well to-day.- ' , The Taumarunui mare Tenure, hit out boldly-down the straight after a couple of rounds of pacework. ' Riding engagements announced include the following;—. . , .... ■ J. M. Pine: Royal;Papa,. La Crown. W, Flowers: Lady Bent. G. Duncan: Icier, Green Linnet, Attentive, Shrewd and Alone. R.
