HAWERA ITEMS
Mrs. Archie Bailey, Wanganui, leaves to-day on her return home. Mrs. Jack Millward, Wanganui, is staying with Mrs. Rota at Ohawe beach. Miss Dorothy Whitehead, Feilding, was a visitor to Hawera during the week. Mr. and Mrs. Caselberg, Masterton, were Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Caselberg’s guests last week-end.
Miss Quirk, Palmerston North, has returned home after spending her holidays at Lake Road, Hawera.
Mrs. G. W. Powdrell, who has been spending a few weeks’ holiday at New Plymouth, returned home on Thursday. Mrs. Cecil Burgess, Wellington, who has been visiting in Hawera for the past few weeks, will leave during the week-end on her return home.
Miss Barbara Thorne-George, Auckland, who has been Miss Mary Bright’s guest, will leave for the north on Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Fergie, Wellington, who have been Mr. and Mrs. Allwright’s guests, left on their return south on Thursday.
Miss E. Bull, Christchurch, who has been Mrs. J. Bull’s guest for the past week left for the South Island on Thursday.
Miss E. Eaton (New Plymouth), Miss M. Brewer (Waverley), Mr. Peter Hawken (Wanganui) and Mr. Robert Greenslade (Dunedin) were Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Washer’s guests during the week. Other hostesses at tea during the week include Mrs. Arthur Coleman, Mrs. W. A. C’CaUaghan, Mrs. Channing Tonks, Mrs. Duckworth and Mrs. F. W. Sutton. Miss S. Macdiarmid has returned to Hawera after a holiday at Auckland. Miss Tini Pitcaithly, Eltham, and Miss Elsie Mullon, New Plymouth, are the guests of Mrs. W. H. Martin, Okaiawa. Miss Hay-Mackenzie entertained Mesdames Richie (Bombay, India), S. Gibson, L. Ritchie, L. J. Bull, Dew, Caplen and Misses B. Watty and E. Bull at afternoon tea on Monday. She wore a pretty frock of black and white silk moracain. At the Hawera Croquet Club on Tues-' .day the Collins ferns were won by Mrs. W. M. Winks and Mrs. F. W/ Homer. On Wednesday the bowling buttons were annexed by Mrs. Adgmson and Mrs. J. N. Henry, and yesterday Mrs. A. E. Wills and Mrs. Henry won the Dingle buttons. i
Mrs. W. O. Williams entertained a few friends at tea on Thursday afternoon in honour of her guest, Miss Middleton, Christchurch. Mesdames Stone-Wigg (Winchester), F. W. Sutton, Channing Tonks, L. J. Bull, Arthur Coleman, Woodward, and Misses B. Watty and L. Hay-MacKenzie were among those present. To receive her friends Mrs. Williams wore a smart frock of figured silk crepe. Miss Middleton’s frock was black satin relieved with deep cream lace. Mrs. W. McL’Dowie and Mrs. A. Woodward entertained Mrs. Archie Bailey, Wanganui, who was for some years a resident of Hawera, and who has been spending a few weeks as Mrs. McL’Dowie’s guest. Mrs. McL’Dowie wore a frock of green and black, and Mrs. Woodward wore a frock of black and red embossed velvet. The guest of honour was wearing black satin. Bridge was the order of the evening. The players were Mesdames H. D. Caplen, R. Page, Duckworth, W. J. Bright and Collins, Misses Glenn, Symes, McLean and Dingle.
Among the visitors to Hawera for the Douglas-Washer wedding on Tuesday were Mr. Percy Thomson and Miss Beth Thomson, Mrs. W. H. H. Young, Mrs. T. H. Penn, and Miss Hope Penn (Stratford), Miss Diana Roberts (Patea), Mrs. Sam Brewer and Miss Marjorie Brewer, Miss Ruth Alexander and Miss Mary Harvey (Waverley), Miss E. Laird (Wanganui), Mr. and Mrs. Ted. McCullough. (Stratford), Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Thomson (Dunedin), Rev. and Mrs. Clarence Eaton, Mr. Owen Eaton and Miss Eileen Eaton (New Plymouth), Mr. Robert Greenslade (Dunedin), Mrs. Armitage, Mr. W. Armitage and Miss M. Armitage (Manaia), the Misses Washer (Inaha), and Miss Edna Washer (Okaiawa).
