The secretary of the Children’s Book Club, London, speaking of the literary tastes of modern children, stated that Fennimore Cooper, Marryat and Ballantyne were no longer popular favourites. “Treasure Island” and “Alice in Wonderland” would never be superseded. At the book club there was little call on them because they were on the nursery bookshelf in every home. “Westward Ho!” was certainly going out of favour. Jane Austen was definitely popular with girls. Once they began they read the whole series.
