TASMAN FLIGHT TIME
WINNER OF COMPETITION. Mr. E. King, of Vivian Street, Wellington, guessed to within a second the time that the Southern Cross would take on its flight across the . Tasman Sea, and he wins the £5O competition conducted by the Wellington Aero Club for the best estimate. The official time was that shown on tire clock in the machine and this time, according to a statement made by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and endorsed by Mr. P. G. Taylor, was 14 hours five minutes 30 seconds. The wheels of the machine rose from the sands of Gerringong Beach, New South Wales, at 2.50 a.m.', and touched the turf at Bell Block aerodrome, New Plymouth, at 4.55 J p.m. Mr. King estimated that the flight would take 14 hours five minutes 29 seconds, He can collect £5O from the Wellington Aero Club or go with 10 friends for a flight in the Southern Cross.
The feature of the competition was the extraordinary closeness of the guesses to the actual time. Nine persons gave times between 14 hours five minutes and 14 hours six minutes. More than a score were not more than a minute out. ’ ' .
