NEW PLYMOUTH EVENING SPORTS. RUNNING AND CYCLING EVENTS. A programme of professional athletic sports was conducted by the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League in Puekura Park last evening. The events were the first of a new series for cup’s in sprint running, distance running and A grade cycling. ? ; . During the evening the club’s president, Mr. J. Sceats, presented trophies won in the first running series before Christ-. mas. The series cup was won by W. . Aubrey arid the runner-up medal by N. Gordon. .When congratulating the win- . nets on their fine sportsmanship, Mr. Sceats remarked on the very fair spiritNew Plymouth cricketers had shown in -!■ their co-operation, which assisted the club in gaining the use of the ground. Details of events are:— 100 yards: C. Fox'(loyds) 1, F. Frethey (7yds) 2, W. Aubrey (syds) 3; time 10s; won by a yard, one foot between sec- ' ond and third. 300 yards: C, Fox (25yds) 1, S. Rogers (27yds) 2, W. Aubrey (18yds) 3; time 29 3-ss; won by inches, one and a half yards between second and third. 600 yards: S. Rogers (50yds) 1, N. Gor- ' don (60yds) 2, :G. Plucke (55yds) 3; time Im 20s. This proved a splendid finish between the first four men. A. Reeve was, fourth. ;; A grade half-mile cycle: G. Sole (60 yds) 1. H. Eva (60yds) 2, T. Hookham (40yds) 3; won by .two length, with the <: same distance between second and third; Also started: R. Yardley (30) and L. Lambeth (85). The three placed riders ■ had the race to themselves. Sole over ■ his favourite distance showed a lot of speed.' c, >. < u e ’v ’ ■ A grade two mile cycle:- A. Ellis (70 : yds) 1, R. Yardley (90yds) 2, G. Tuffery ; (200yds) 3; time 5m 6 2-ss. Also started:? H. Eva (220), T. Hookham '(170). Ellis and Yardley caught the others with ? three laps to go. .Hookham dropped out and Tuffery made a “break” with one \ and a quarter laps to go and led’with the bell. Ellis jumped smartly to the lead entering the back straight and won by two lengths, Yardley being four lengths ahead of Tuffery. ,<• : ■-V B grade half-mile cycle: Doug. George > (scr) 1, L. Lambeth (50yds) 2, J. Gillies . (15yds) 3; time Im 14 4-ss. Lambeth led, and with one and a quarter laps to go R. Bellringer’s pedal struck the ground, which sent Gillies wide. George jump- ' ed through the opening, caught Lambeth with half a lap to go, and won by one . and a half lengths. The races will be: Cycling, A grade three-quarters arid one and a half miles, B grade three-quarters of a mfle; running 75yards, 440 yards and 880 yards.
