SURF CLUBS’ COMPETITIONS

HONOURS TO CASTLECLIFF. PATEA BEACH PERFORMANCES. Three points only separated the two .Castlecliff. and one Patea surf club teams at the annual competition for the Patea Beach Shield and-the Anson Cup at Patea yesterday. Castlecliff B team with a total of 146 points took the Patea ißeach Shield, with Castlecliff .A run-ners-up with 145; Patea was third with 143. Only one Castlecliff team competed 'with Patea in the march past for the Anson Cup, which Castlecliff annexed with a tally of 47. to Patea’s 45J. East End (New Plymouth) and Opunake were not represented as was hoped. The trophies were presented by the Mayor, Mr. F. Ramsbottom, who congratulated the competing teams on their competent showing. He referred to the splendid work of the organisers who, with the Seaside Society, had done much to popularise the Patea beach. The personnel of the competing teams was as .follows: —

Turnbull, Wanganui, were judges and Mr. Alex Manderson, Patea, was timekeeper. FACTORY TEAMS AT CRICKET. . JOLL’S HOLD PATERSON CUP.. Joll’s Kapuni and Otakeho combined cricket team had no difficulty in retaining the Paterson Cup in their first challenge from Kaupokonui. Joll’s made 108, Ross . Eden being responsible for 62 of this total and D. Mitchell 35. Kaupokonui were able to make only 18. Reg Eden was caught off the fust ball. The winning skip, F. Julian, finished with four wins in the five games played, closely followed by L. Des Forges with 31 wins. In the leads the issue was in doubt right through the afternoon, R. Peat, J. Judson and H. Marcroft being level with four wins and one loss. The final match of five heads was won by Peat, who defeated Marcroft by five to four over five heads. : A summary of the matches is:—

MOTOR-CYCLISTS INJURED. BROKEN ARM IN OEO COLLISION. Two motor-cyclists were injured as the result of a collision which occurred, on the Main South Road, Oeo, on Friday night. Both, the injured men were young Maoris. Mr. J. Rei, Manaia,. received a fracture of the arm and severe bruises. The other, Mr. Hunt, Tawhiti, received abrasions on legs and arm. Both machines are said to have carried pillion riders. HURLEYVILLE NOTES. A jolly dance was held in the Hurleyville hall on Thursday evening. Visitors were present from and Alton, about 25 couples comfortably filling the floor. Miss Annie Hall gave a humorous recitation. A. “split-name” competition was won by Mr. D. Hurley and Miss Commons and a Monte Carlo dance by Mr. G. Corbett and Miss Joyce Allan. Those present included Mesdames Hamilton, Haydon, D. Hurley, Large, E. Hurley, N. Hunt, D. Hurley, Couchman, Black, McDonald and Adlam, Misses A. and G. Hall, A. Large, M. Large, V. Pratley, P. and K. Hurley, J. Elliot, D. Scown, 8... McDonald, Joan Adlam, J. Commons, M. Walsh, Joyce and Jean Allan.

Mr. and Miss V. Pratley are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. N. Hunt.

Mrs. Fullarton returned . from Auckland on Saturday. Miss Commons and Miss Walsh returned to Auckland on Monday morning. Miss Elliot has returned to Wellington. Mrs. Hamilton left for Auckland,, en route for Fiji, on Monday morning. . Mrs. Stone, Auckland, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Locker.
