Rescue at Patea.

■ The Patea annual surf and life saving competitors were interrupted when a man named Kavanagh was swept /OS his feet by. the outgoing. tid? while bathing in the Patea ■ River yesterday. He was being rapidly carried out into the rough water between the walls when his call for help ■ was heard. Immediately his plight was observed a large party of surfers and others set out to assist. He was secured by Mr. Robert Adams after a magnificent effort and brought in apparently little the worse. Small Rubbish Fire.

The Hawera Fire Brigade received a call to an incipient outbreak, of fire among some rubbish in Surrey Street on Saturday, night. The flames had not obtained a strong hold and little damage was done.

Saturday Half-Holiday. The Hawera County Council on Saturday agreed without discussion that Saturday should be the statutory half-holi-day throughout the county for this, year. Exemptions, it was pointed out, could be easily obtained by -individual application to the Department of Labour. Rations for Unemployed.

Thirty-three families participated on Saturday in the weekly distribution of rations given to registered arid necessitous unemployed during their standdown week at Hawera. The following commodities were made up into parcels and issued- according to the number of children: 331 b butter, 171 b tea, 1821 b flour, 1221 b sugar, 661 b rice, 391 b loaves bread.

DANCE AT OEO HALL.

Another successful and enjoyable dapce was held at, Oeo on Friday night, there being, a large attendance, from Hawera, Opunake, Otakeho and surrounding districts. Mr. Stewart Gordon, the blind musician, played solos on the saxophone and tin-whistle which were much enjoyed. He contributed extras as. well as playing in Jack Hooker’s orchestra. Extras were given by Mr. Ruakere and Mr. Davy. Messrs. Ruakere and Davy were masters of ceremonies for the evening. ■ It is proposed to hold two further summer dances and at the second a farewell will be given Mr. Gordon' before he returns to the Auckland Blind Institute. -
