COUNTER CLAIM FOR GRAZING. MAGISTRATE SETTLES DISPUTE. Alleging that £5 10s. was; owing to him for . a cow, William F. McCullough, stock dealer, sued George Lamplough, butcher, at ’ the Stratford Court' yesterday. lamplough counter-claimed for £lO for grazing on the grounds that McCullough used Lamplough’s paddocks for’holding stock. The cow was condemned 7 at the .abattoir and ;the : compensation -was collected by Lamplough. Mr. R W. Tate/ S.M.,- gave judgment for McCullough for £1 10s 3d (the compensation). with costs £2 9s. Lamplough was non-suited on the counter-claim. McCullough said he did not sell the cow to Lamplough. The latter was short of ;' -a - cow ■ aiid • took one belonging to McCullough, from Abbott’s paddock. Lamplough advised McCullough Of what he ' had done and agreed to . pay £7 . for the cow. McCullough did not take the advice. The compensation on account of the cow s being condemned was received by Lamplough. When he went bankrupt in 1929, McCullough continued, he owed Lamplough Bros. £lO. Cecil. Lamplough. pressed him for the amount, and McCullough, said George owed him £7: for a cow, but Cecil said he was: not- concerned with that. McCullough • and George agreed ■that as the cow was condemned the amount owing on the animal should be reduced to £5 10s.. WHAREHUIA YOUTH MAKES PISTOL
BREACHES OF FIREARMS LAWS.
Leslie Joseph Pittams, farm labourer, Wharehuia, who ■. lives with his mother, obtained a- broken shotgun some, months ago and with the aid; of considerable ingenuity and some other firearm parts, constructed a ' workable pistol to fire .22 cartridges. : He carried the weapon about, the farm with him and shot birds with it. That fact became known to the . police and Pittams pleaded guilty at. the Stratford Court yesterday to having carried the pistol beyond the limits of his home and to having an unregistered firearm/in his possession. The first charge was .withdrawn; and Pittams was ordered to pay costs on the second. Sergeant J. J. Power said the weapon was effective. When questioned, Pittams- immediately • admitted that he had the pistoT and produced it. It was fully charged with six cartridges, one of which had been fired.
•“Pittams showed a large mount of ingenuity -and diligence in making this pistol and it is a pity they were not directed'into better-channels,” said Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M. “People who have firearms must have them registered according to the direction of the police.” An-order for. confiscation of the pistol was'made. -...'t..
